Estates.........Im a new recent convert. Volvo's Audis, Beemers, Saab, even another Ford if your that way inclined...the choice is endless.
People don't like them because they are not trendy, electric or 4x4s. Dirty diesels especially...........how dare they put such a planet destroying powerplant in a vehicle
The car tax frightens people off....so chose wisely. Dont go to deep down the rabbit hole on forums with peoples horrors stories on your chosen car!!. I looked for one with paperwork to prove timing belt/clutch servicing etc. Not main dealer...who cares as long as its been done its one less headache to worry about.
Picked up this for peanuts (wayyy less than your 5k budget!) a few months back. She's got a few miles under the belt, few minor battle scars, but drives spot on. Done a few jobs on it, small niggly stuff. Brakes/tyres etc consumables.
Just bask in the glory of handing over a fraction of the percentage that someone parted with when it was new.............

Sorry to hear of your woes, hopefully onwards and upwards!
Can’t say I’ve had a great end to the year - absolutely full of a really crappy cold (I’ve had 3 COVID tests in the last 2 days and all negative so at least it’s not that I guess…) and have been in a South Wales steelworks trying to get 20 odd year old SCADA system working for the last 2 days so away in a hotel, just got back now in time for a hopefully quiet new year. I wasn’t even on call but the guy who was tested positive for Covid so he asked me if I would do it for him!!!
I’d agree with an estate - I had a seat exeo a few years back and it was a great car (an Audi A4 with a nicer interior and a cheaper price tag). It was super practical and great to drive.

Lots of choices there to look at. Thanks to everyone who contributed. I certainly don't do trendy, So I'm not after the latest fashion car/van. As long as it works and is reasonably cheap to run then I'm happy. (and starts all the time)

What about the berlingo sized vans? The HDi’s are good and higher driving position
They are on my radar as well, But Most are big money with high mileage

Doblo JTD all 3 we had did over 250k and still working, fair on fuel 40+ went well simple, but not the later rear end version, none suffered from rust the last one an 07 has now done 300k+ hard on tires though, they all had rear shocks lower front pans one had exhaust complete, one had syncro go on 3rd due to driver forgetting there was a clutch ( damaged syncro hub)

On the bright side, its not actually new year yet so your new year is bound to get better
saw that and laughed out loud. They have to make at least £1000 on each car they buy. The buyers are on a % commission, so the cheaper they can by it, the better.

My Mondeo 3 went for scrap afterfailing its MOT cos it started burning oil at 114000 after having it fopr 11 years, so cant complain!!, I replaced it with a Mitsubishi outlander 2007 with 119000 on a 2 litre (VW) turbo diesel, for 2 grand! runs like a clock, and the back bumper folds down to give extra access to the rear, me and the Mrs lift her heavy electric wheelchair into the boot. and I just come back from York (60 mile round trip) at 44 mpg! I am well happy with it!

I had to buy my first ever proper sensible car last month for my wife who needed a vehicle to do 300 miles trips and leave in airport car parks for weeks on end, unfortunatly her Puma Defender would almost certainly be pinched. Working overseas in desperation I bought a 2013 2.0tdi golf Mk7 completely unseen off Facebook. Expecting the worst I had it delivered straight to VW specialist who apart from needing two tyres cannot find anything wrong with it. I paid £4500 for it and wife is very pleased with it. it uses half the fuel the Puma does and £20 road tax was a nice surprise too!

Bangernomics! Buy something with a year's MOT for cheap, run it for the 12 months and if it passes another...bonus!! If not, rinse and repeat.
