Replacing a sink in the same hole of an existing worktop-how standarised are sink sizes?

I am asking this question in respect of removing the existing 'plastic type' sink , and fitting a stainless one. The chosen sink will need to fit in the cutout of the existing worktop. Is it going to be difficult to match another sink to the existing hole in respect of size ? Thanks.

Is this a 'sit on' or undermount type of sink?

If the former then the cutout for the sink bowl is not very precise and whilst they aren't standardised sizes, it should be possible to find a suitable replacement.
Obviously, the undermount type has a very precise cutout and you will have more difficulty.

Manufacturers' websites give precise dimensions of the sink and its cutout. You will need to establish the size of your current one then I'm afraid it's a tedious task of wading through all the websites to find a replacement with the right dimensions to match your hole.

not a problem if it needs more cutting out really, just dont go the other way!

Thanks for your advice. I have looked at your links I can see that one is a sink & drainer and the other is a sink & bowl type. Looking distinctly different from each other, but I have no idea which is a 'sit on' or which is an 'undermount'.

I don't actually know what the terminology means?

They are not even remotely standard.

I was watching 2 -side by side sinks get fitted recently.
Both from the same manufacturer, basically one was right-handed and one was left handed.
You would think it would just be the same sink, rotated 180deg but one was 10mm longer than the other. Both for the Cutout and the surround.

Best to put a bit of cardboard over the existing sink and cut around the outer edge of it. Then take that shopping with you and find one that's just big enough to cover it.
Then trim out the worktop as required.

Or, if the current one is bigger than you want cut a sheet of stainless to cover the original hole and cut the new sink into that.

Gonna be a matter of searching to find one the right size. Then measuring the actual item before removing the old one

Too big is preferred. Easy to cut bigger either with a tracksaw and jigsaw with downcutters or by creating a MDF jig and routing out
