MIG Welding wires

Hey any body out there help me out here, I'm looking for a list of the classifications of all MIG welding wires and there applications in English. Sounds strange but I live in Germany and finding a list in English is not the easiest task here. I have asked several manufacturers but they can only supply a list of their own wires which is not what I am looking for. I am also looking for any reading material which could help me as far as welding wire classification and use is concerned. The reason is quite simple I just want to learn more about the consumable side of life in the trade.

Sounds like an interesting project - have you found a list in German that you can share?

I'm working with a couple of other members on the forum to write up which consumables might be used for different steels. MIG wire tends to be low hydrogen so where there might be different rods used in arc welding the same wire might be used in MIG. The new section will be launched a month ago (pending delays at this end) but it won't answer your question completely.

Have you found the Lincoln page about MAG wires?

Hi Malcolm, many thanks for your reply, in answer to your question the only lists that are readily available are the manufacturers lists where they list there product and then its recommended uses, but this is not what I want. I need to learn the classifications as given by the governing bodies, simmilar to the MMA electrode coding system. I have also contacted the DVS (German welding institute) I am hoping they will have what I am looking for (in German of course) I have also visited the TWI web site but I cannot get anything out of there web site without being a member. The standard wires SG2 and SG3 etc are not the problem, its the others that interest me, the not so popular wires.
With regards to your project it sounds interesting and I look forward to reading your results but if you are also putting a list together where do you go to get your facts? Many thanks for link to the Lincoln page, I have actually seen this and this is a good example of what I mean, The AWS codes are given which is a big help but the description describes their wire, I need exactly this with the description not only from the AWS but also the European bodies. I never realized that it would be such a momoth task when I started it!!

I got on this mission through someone I met whilst working for a German machine manufacturer, he had previously worked for Castolin who are one of the worlds authorities on applications, this guy had gathered so much knowledge about consumables during his time with Castolin it was amazing, he knew the codification backwards and I witnessed on several occasions how this knowledge was used to benifit the customer and his application. This guy was an absolute font of knowlege as far as wires are concerned and what it did was made me realize how important this knowlege is, I had always gone with what was recommended but this guy showed me that this is often not correct and sometimes it pays to question the WPS. Anyway that is the story and I am grateful for any/all help that anybody can offer me.

Let me get this right. You are looking for a list of all the different wire grades and the materials they can weld.

That would be some list.

Some grades are very specific to a few different steel grades. For example 1CrMo has quite a limited list of materials its suitable for welding but still there are probably 20 werkstoff numbers.
Some of the grades can weld maybe hundreds of steel grades and then they could also be used for other applications dependent on circumstances. Thats why we have Metallurgists.

If Im right in what you want it would really be impossible to write and cover all possibilities but maybe im thinking too deep.

Been after something like this for years, as Al says, the amount of information required to complete it would be vast.

Believe the library at TWI have some sort of database along these lines but there is that much info it couldn't possibily be put down on paper
