An old mate of mine has a gas supply business
in Darlington Co Durham.
He been suppling me pub co2 at £10 a refill
(didn't charge a rental possibly because we
used to drink together) .Rang him today about
95/5 argon co2 mix. Quoted me £65 plus vat
for outright purchase of a 10L bottle (said it would
be OK for 5 years), then £16 plus vat for a refill.
Don't know if this represents value against renting.

Just thought I would drop in one.

I rang BOC for a price of a 5ft 50L bottle, total came not far off £200 with all the stupid charges, I asked if they would price match, errr NOPE.

I then rang http://www.cellargas.co.uk/ as recumended by another forum member.
Great friendly people to deal with, cost me about £155 walk in walk out. No pick up charges and all the other charges BOC do and I think it was about £55 + vat exchage. This is for a 5ft 50L bottle.

It would have cost me £5 in fuel by the time I messed around in town going down to BOC and about £8 in fuel going to Hereford and back.

Saved nearly £50

Yes, Jawel Paint supplier do welding gases

Thanks for the Jawel tip! These guys are an auto paint & tools supplier and their website reflects that fact with no info about welding gas. But, i gave them an call to check and sure enough....

My local Coventry store (just off Jn3 M6) is basically one of their paint outlets but they can get it in a couple of days. Quoted "about £50+VAT for Argon mix outright purchase of pub-size cylinder and £25+VAT to refill", but no doubt the exact prices are as per the previous message. I ordered anyway because its a great deal and spitting distance from me

I have just had a very pleasant conversation with a guy from Jawel. I can confirm that for those of us in the West Mid's/Staffordshire area this is a very good deal. There is a Jawel outlet on the approach to Wolverhampton along the main Cannock Rd. Here's the contact details:

The bottles are apparently ex-fire extinguishers that are fully and legally pressure tested with new valves.

Using CO2 10l (?) cylinders available from Plunketts (now Unipart Automotive) Ripon / Northallerton etc. but they get them filled at Woodlands on Thirsk Industrial estate. Who do the same deal.

About £20 initial for bottle and £20 per refill. I picked up an extra bottle at the scrappy now I keep a spare in stock - stunning.

Gas bottles 10litre/19kg approx filled to 200 bar. No rental pay the right to use(10 year bottle life) £60 + VAT one off payment at the initial purchase.

the first time you buy and the contents.argon/argon CO2 mix any ratio you like, all inert gasses. then upon refill you just pay for contents. Contents price: 100% argon = £18.75 + VAT and 80% argon/20% CO2 mix = £17.25 + VAT

We are looking at bigger bottles in the new year. Also we have no system in place for a carrier at the mo, it is something we will look at upon request. We also have a shop on ebay early stages yet but we have put torch consumables on and it is working progress (ibweld) on ebay.
