Be careful, i am reminded of the lad who decided to chop down one of the trees on his land for firewood. Turns out it was a walnut tree and the wood was worth serious money for things like furniture veneer and gunstocks. He was not happy when he was told.

Its all worth a fortune until you try and sell it, take any stick to a saw mill and the teeth sucking/head shaking starts. There may have been a few gunstocks or chogs for turning in it but the guys interested in veneer butts are very selective.

We do, I'm dreading him growing up and don't know what we'll do when he doesn't fit up the chimney any more. Probably have to kidnap another one I've cut his gruel to the minimum but he keeps growing.

Re burning wet wood -

Years ago I wrote a little mini educational thing on burning stuff. It was science / physics based. Supposed to be fun but also educational. Thermite and the like.

Anyway one bit of it caused me to do the numbers on wet wood. I'm not going to know the figures here, but you have however many joules of energy from complete combustion and a whole load of other stuff going on.

If the wood is wet, there can actually be a fair physical volume of water. That you then need to, it's assumed, not only raise from room temperature, but also input the state change energy (vaporise) to get rid of.

If you do the maths, and I can't remember the figures, but it's not like you knock off a few percent. You end up using really quite significant proportions of your fuel just to burn off the water content.

And that's before you get into the stuff like the constant drain of energy keeping the burn temperature low, and below the flash point / auto ignition point of the heavier combustible elements. So you end up not only costing energy in "boiling" off the water but also in loosing raw unburnt fuel too.

This isn't connected with the previous chat above, but for anyone -

If you're proper bored at some point, do the numbers, and you'll never be keen on burning damp wood for home heating again.

I split that lot I got hold of using a hydraulic splitter, some of the bigger stuff put up a bit of a fight and the amount of water that oozed out as it was being squeezed was unreal!

Looks like pine - prob scots pine I'd guess. If it is it normally splits not too bad.

Couldn't agree more. There is an extraordinary amount of water in fresh wood. For the house, I have a woodpile for the odd occasion (usually around Christmas) when I fire up the fireplace in the sitting room.

Rest of the time I just want to get rid of the wood. I do like a nice bonfire but that needs to build up over several months so I have a selection of wood burning stoves and baskets, plus of course the old washing machine drum book burner.

I was quite happy to have the old workshop heater running at lower than optimum. The thing would put out way too much heat anyway. I moved it outside after an incident with a bank of carburettors, I leave you to fill in the details...

Anyhow, while it is easy to jump to conclusions whenever anyone mentions burning wood, there are many occasions when people just want to get rid of it. This is especially true around me here where a neighbour threw up a line of Leylandii (a type of conifer which I would casually refer to as "pine" when it is not).

Sadly wood disposal also applies to my local joinery shop where I go to fetch interesting offcuts of oak or sapele (whatever that is!). He is currently burning everything including some highly desirable offcuts, just to keep the heat up in the stove to allow him to dispose of a massive pile of junk wood.
