Today I got a bearing puller set in the post ..all the way from Schorndorf Germany

The things are hewn together from pure chinesium, they've never seen Germany.

But there are clues on the box:

- It doesn't say "Made in Germany" anywhere, because then it would have been justifiable and could have been taken off the market;

- The barcode starts with 87, goods that actually come from Germany usually start with 40;

- According to the barcode, the crap comes from
Interbosch B.V., Toermalijnstraat 11, 1812 RL ALKMAAR, The Netherlands,
Telefon: +31725405024 / Telefax: +31725405024 / E-Mail: Daniel@Interbosch.nl / Internet: http://www.interbosch.nl;

- On the box, they didn't always write their alleged German name the same way;

- The Dutch designation comes first;

- Only in third place is a designation that has been remotely imitated from German, but is still not a German designation;

- Other clues.

The presumed short delivery time indicates that the part was already in the UK and that someone has found a way to skim off the supposed price increases due to Brexit for their own pockets without having to pay them themselves.

What also doesn't help is the fact that many of the EU consumer protection regulations no longer apply to you, something like that will increase, all the crap one can't get rid of here in sufficient numbers will be dumped on you....

Guys, you have a German forist among you who sees something like this at first glance and has also already paid mountains of apprenticeship money himself on crap, so he knows one or two of the current tricks.

You should ask him before you buy something that claims to be German, he'll be happy to help.

You'll find they are about the same sort of money as Sykes.

In truth it is crappy Chinese jobby in a printed up box .

By the way, I'm still doing the same thing, even though I've long since known better.

Last week I noticed that a 3/16" Allen key was missing for the four-way turning tool holder of my - for me new - ML7.

I thought this won't be the last inch Allen key I painfully notice missing in the middle of the night and at the weekend, so for now I'll buy a whole set made from chinesium for the price of a single quality Allen key, in time I'll realise which ones I really need and get those as quality tools.

Today the miracle tool arrived, my worst fears about the quality were undercut - some don't even fit loosely in the corresponing heads of the srews, the size changes over the lengths of a tool several times, each one has a diffent finish, ...

The junk goes back to the seller ASAP, he pays for the return collection. Let them pay for what they do!

My self-filed 3/16" Allen key from an old IKEA 5mm key fitted better than the corresponding specimen from the purchased set:

Again, the old pattern: a name that is supposed to sound German ("Stahlkaiser" like "Steel Emporer") , some descriptions in something like Dutch, English and almost German.

The barcode again gives it away:

They do work but are a bit slow in responding and another problem is the magnet picks up steel swarf. I swapped mine out for a slotted disc and opto.

Ah I see , about a tenner delivered so I cant expect perfection , Got a laser tacho that I could compare to but that needs a reflective or dark patch to read off and never had much luck with it either

Got a couple of stub drills and some earplugs from Zoro, unfortunately the mic stand was delayed but should be here next week.
Also got a set of steel drawers off my mum which belonged to my granny. Should be ideal for all my micrometers and measuring equipment.

I’ve recently had to use Kukko’s after sales service - very good. Needed parts for a 30 year old puller - no problem, sent on approval, no need to pay until they’d arrived and found to fit OK.

Today I got a bearing puller set in the post ..all the way from Schorndorf Germany ... four days earlier than advised . I purchased it from over there because every time I tried to buy off a UK site it kept coming back out of stock , available for backorder some time in mid to late December.

The three pullers in the set looked good on Amazon , it looked like it was made in Germany as the box was all printed up in German French and English .
In truth it is crappy Chinese jobby in a printed up box .
The main thrust screws screws are at 86 or so degree instead of being at right angles to the spiders , the leg links that connect the legs to the spiders are differing in sizes up to 2 mm between pivot holes , the only way they can be made to work after a fashion is that they have put 2.5 mm over size bolt holes in them . These links are also very much off set radiused at the ends ..so much so that they actually fouled the spiders instead of allowing a rotation that allows the legs to hang out in equal amounts. The bolts they have used for th pivot pins are full thread mild steel screws with plain nuts . One gentle pull flattened much of those pivot bolt threads .

The legs :- from pivot holes to the slightly ground back cut jaws is any thing up to 2. mm in difference of distance so trying to get a 90 degree square on pull is awkward to say the least . Had to free hand drill a decent 1/4 " deep counter sunk hole in th shaft end so the pullers thrust bolt stayed put centrally in the shaft end .
They are supposed to be drop forged steel ..they gave off the biggest globs of fat orange mild steel round sparks I've ever seen.

Final bitch about them the thrust bolts bolts on all three pullers are mild steel with very roughly cut threads & cheaply plated look at the picture of the thrust screw.... it's rusty so is the leg in the same picture . , the heads of the bolts are neither metric , AF , BSF or Whitworth . They have been run over a grinder to give an unequal six sided head . even my 8 inch adjustable struggled with them due to the differences across the flats.

I accepted the extortionate cost for them as I want to get my lathe back up & running . Price wise 25 euro for the three sets of pullers ( comparable to UK prices when they are available ) but then they slapped me with the standard EU export tariff of 21 euro as P&P total cost 44.90 euro .

Oh what I do to have a quality Pickavant set of pullers it's been a 55 year old desire that's remained unrequited . ,,,,but I can't get a second mortgage for them ( Even at second hand prices ? ) .

I finally warmed the bearing with a small gas blowlamp to hand hot hot & got the bearing pulled off with ease after putting an old bicycle chain round the legs to stop them spreading out & coming off .

If you paid less than £100 for a bearing puller, then it's Chinese.

SKF are good. FAG are good. Kuko are good but chunky.

The EU style customs label on the outer box seems to say it's come from within the EU the invoice shows a German post code of D-73614 Schorndorf & he has a UID of DE246223854 , plus his Steuernummer 82151/51212 , the news paper packing inside the box was dated 21 Nov 2021 so it seems to have come from a German goods export company .

I must confess I didn't think I'd be getting much , more like a " RATIO spezial preis pile of junk " .

Still it did the job after a bit of gentle modification . Everything is now rebuilt and partly run in . Tomorrow I'll pump some more grease in the taper rollers and give it another hours off load running time to ensure every is nice & warm and expanded to a working temp before I put a slight preload on the headstock shaft retaining ring & lock it off,

Thanks Brad .. I knew all of that , but for a one or two off use the 20 euro plus 24 euro carriage was OK . The aim of my initial post was to let others in the same boat know what they might be getting and then make their decisions to buy or not to buy .

Are they behind sealed windows in housings to stop crud & cutting oils etc. impairing them ?
