They have, and its a good idea and easy for anyone with any level of knowledge to attempt.
Also it is a good contribution to trying to solve Tinbasherdans problem. Unfortunately some posters will not agree and feel that posting about the jump lead when it has already been mentioned is unacceptable dispite not giving any valuable input of their own as to resolve the op's issue.
Also not taking into account that people of all reading abilities whether good, bad or otherwise impaired may find value in trying to contribute themselves.

@Tinbasherdan take off each contact and give a quick rub over with sandpaper or emery paper. If it's been sat for a while in a field it might have just got dirty / rusty contacts which will hamper any current carrying.

no one has said the obvious
Perked in a farmers field mice rats etc have you removed the air filter first then checked for nibbled cables etc engine earth to chassis
but if cables getting hot to starter i would be looking at the starter motor
