Bootlace Ferrule Kit

I ordered a kit from eBay with a copy of the knipex pliers. £20 odd.

It's not too bad but it struggles to crimp wires over 2.5mm effectively. Now I don't know whether that's the crimp tool or the ferrules causing that.

Do I go out and pay £120 for the genuine knipex ferrule crimper.https://www.amazon.co.uk/97-53-04-Self-Adjusting-multi-component/dp/B000XIUWAC


or pay £300 for something like this Weidmuller kit which I hope will have high quality crimpers and ferrules.

I've got my jones and shipman to rewire and possibly some of the other machines so I need something decent. I don't think the £20 tool is making a decent crimp.

I just used tighten the screw on bigger cables, never used the tool. This was upto 50mm cables, never had an issue

I did heatshrink every ferrule in place as well

Get the Knipex tool and get some ferrules from your local electrical wholesaler, I wouldn't pay RS prices for consumables if I could help it.

The crimping significants ultimately depends on the terminal they are being installed into

I have the cheap kit, I have noticed the ferrule has to be full of cable to get an effective crimp so I double up the cable. Works ok like that, don't think the hand crimpers have much crush scope so you don't really want a lot of room/air space around in the ferrule/cable before you start.

I’ve got a set of facom bootlace crimpers and a set of cheap Amazon specials that I keep in my laptop bag (look like the knipex ones you linked to) - the cheap ones do a great job to be perfectly honest, never had one fail and they are always consistent. If your going to use them a lot then go for the knipex I guess, they are a quality tool - but I use my cheap ones a lot and wouldn’t bat an eyelid at getting another set if needed.

As also said above the wire needs to fill the crimp, if it’s loose then you might need the next size down. I tend to have more problems on smaller sizes if anything, once you get to cat 5 cable size strands then it’s harder to get a good crimp.

I have the Facom ones and they are excellent, a fair bit cheaper than Knipex as well. Cembre are worth a look as well. When buying this kind of thing it’s worth shopping around.

I use this kit. I've not had a problem with the supplied pliers.

You could always ask to try them before buying the kit.

I've got a cheapo set of 4 jaws, again good for 6mm² - slight drawback to the 4 jaws is that since the crimp is square it will twist and self align to the clamping screw. If you have the double entry ferrules in high density terminal block then you'll need to orientate the crimp with the double entry ferrule sleeve.

Get mine from a company called switch electronics, they have not let me down, i dont like the cam type knipex ones, they feel too mushy compared to the older style crimpers

One way might be to get a cheaper crimp tool and a ferrule die e.g.:

Far cheaper than the Weidmuller crimper solution. Getting the bees knees kit only really starts to make sense if doing thousands of crimps.

I use the manual calibration method, if I can't pull the ferrule off it's passed

I thought that the whole point of using bootlace ferrules was to gather all the wire strands together in a solid deformable bundle, but avoid the risk of cold-flow of soldered strands causing the screw pressure to loosen.
