MMmm lathe not engaged properly

I have put this here instead of my other threads so i can keep track and maybe more response direct on this problem.

Now i noticed that my lathe at times looses rpm at the chuck not motor.

I decided to remove the head stock cover and spray oil all over the place, but if needs must.


Now burrr with me as while get a few pics and video of the problem as i cant download now from the laptop and need to do it from my phone. I cant be doing with typing all this on my phone give me five mins

BTW its a gear head stock and no clutch but a sliding bearing selector that is not engaging and slipping or something.

So the first image is showing the gear that moves to the left to engage forward. The next are how it should be. The collar so gear in forward does not fully engage and so the bearing gear just spins.
There are tabs if you can see them in fwb and rev gears that engage with sliding selector.
So much as I can stop it woth my hand even if running at 250rpm. In reverse I can't.

That might well be a sliding dog selector but there's definitely a clutch pack in there too I can see it in the pic.

Probably just the clutch slipping. Quite possible there is some kind of release mechanism that works with the moving of the selector lever.

That is a clutch and it looks like the driving tabs that should be on the metal plates and stick out of the slots have sheared off!

The next slot around appears to have the tabs present Phil.

you may find them in the bottom of the gearbox! what lathe is it?

well the pic is confusing, but I see no tabs there either, they should go right to the outside diameter of the clutch basket to get max surface area for driving. The thing to do is strip it as it is obviously slipping.

Is this your VFD problem?

Could you take some photos further out and including the forward / reverse lever? If I remember right one of your levers looked to be "not original".
What is it F/R for just the leadscrew, headstock?

all tabs are there and move down as they should, well same as when the slider goes to reverse.

Just been faffing a bit more and It seems there is something stopping it from fully engaging forward gear. cant see anything missing, damaged etc

another thing a bit off topic but i got a digi rev counter and it seems as i thought that the pulley is only spinning 768rpm on a reading within 10mm of the pulley edge. did wonder as the chuck is only shown a max of around 500rpm. i thought it was spinning slow.

yes it is slipping so the reason is as its not engaging fully?

i thought it was the VFD but then had a thought to look i the head stock and the F/R only work fully in R and slips in F.

trying to get a dam video to show but the forum says the vid is to big or something.

what make of lathe is it? Have a look in the bottom of the gearbox for any little metal tabs or other "bits"

Have a look at the lever to see if something is stopping it going over correctly or it has moved.

Right, I may be wrong about the tabs then, basically the clutcxh is made up of alternate driven plates and friction plates, half anchored to the centre shaft the driven plates, and half driving to the outer part with the gear on it, when it is all squeezed together by the lever, the drive begins. The lever may need adjusting as it will have some sort of mechanism to keep the pressure on the plates when it is in drive.

Well, in the video you can clearly see that selecting reverse works some mechanism to press all the clutch plates together. The forward selector isn't moving fully in so the plates are not getting clutched.

It's gonna have to cme apart I'm afraid.

Yep, have to be stripped, something is stopping the clutch fully engaging You may be able to spot the difference between the working reverse clutch and the slipping forward clutch, good luck!

yes lucky in the fact that forward and reverse looks identical for spotting differences
