Kindle 7 paper white help needed

Hello, I've had my Kindle version 7 paper white for years, no problems. Until now.
I have five 'collections'. Over 2000 books in all.
Charged it overnight, now there are no collections on the kindle. Just all 2000+ titles in alphabetical order.
On the Amazon website, manage your devices, the collections is greyed out.
If I sort according to collections, it finds all the collections, states how many books in each. But if I click on a collection, 'no items found'.
I have de-registered and re-registered, no difference.
It isn't on aeroplane mode. I have synced it.

Any ideas?

Do you or did you ever have a local copy for all your books?

I keep all mine on Calibre, also have a paper white, never trust network/cloud storage.

No I haven't. Like most things, you only think of back-ups when it goes wrong.

I imagine it is an issue with log in privileges etc. You probably have to "authenticate" (or reauthenticate) your device with Amazon.

Best start with their IT department/customer services etc. I have had problems before by having "too many devices" on some of my Mac stuff when I have logged in on a new device without de-authorising an older one.

<edit> oh and once you fix it, grab a copy of calibre and download all your books onto your PC. They are tiny little files, take up no room at all.

What a palaver!
I reset the kindle, wiping everything from it.
I tried adding books from Calibre, did a few ok.

Then I reset it again, wiped everything off.
This time the kindle asked questions, needed passwords, name, inside leg etc. Nothing like the first reset.

Back onto calibre, selected all Stephen King's books from a 'source', transferred perfectly.
Next task, delete all the books from the cloud, they were all free anyway, and stick to transferring from my 'source' (it has 17000 books on it).

No I haven't. Like most things, you only think of back-ups when it goes wrong.

As selfish as it sounds, it's normally reading about other people's misfortunes that sends me off to check when I last backed important stuff up. That said, on a relatively closed platform like a Kindle, there's a limit to how much control you have over stuff like this.

I'm fairly new to Kindle - I love reading, but I still prefer an actual book for all sorts of reasons - not least that you don't pick up loads of Kindle stuff at the car boot sale or on the charity stall in the local co-op. But a car boot sale last year yielded a Kindle Fire for free, which after a charge and a hard reset proved to be in good working order. The only stuff I have on it is free stuff, and all the stuff that the previous owner left on it, some of which disappeared when I re-registered it to me. I thought it would be handy to convert some old car manuals to Kindle format but I've only ever tried one which wasn't very successful.

Calibre will aslo do those sorts of PDF to eBook conversions or at the least, allow it to be installed on the Kindle for example. It is a bit of a chore though to read a PDF on the Kindle, especially if it hasn't scaled perfectly. The Papre White was the game changer for me. Soft backlighting and a very reasonable facsimile of a well lit page.

Having said that, if I am going to pay good money for "content" I'm going to get a hard copy of it! All my Kindle stuff is err, "found material"** Most of my other obsessions are paperback books.

***Except for one book from the Murderbot Diaries which, having gotten hooked on the series, couldn't find anywhere (else) except on Amazon.

Reminds me of when I was playing a lot of Doom, while walking around town if someone appeared around the corner of a building my mind would be telling me to reach for the space bar.

All the stuff I have put on it is stuff that has appeared for free from time to time and I've downloaded it to read on the PC Kindle reader, then not got around to it. I also have a lot of paperback books, I've been clearing our garden shed out and found a lot in there and I'm sure there are still more to retrieve. I've been bringing them into the house to get rid of the damp and at some point I'll cull the duplicates and see what is there. While I have been trying to stock up on books to read over winter (when the car boots stop running) it does look as if there are plenty in the pile that I either haven't read, or have read and forgotten.

What I did with my ancient book collection is palletise them. Not literally a pallet but a very shallow "apple" crate. They wedge in about three rows deep arranged by size and the "book tray" looks for all the world like a picture frame. Ended up with half a dozen like that which when stacked together looks like the wall of a library. Made them easy to move, store or display (back in the day when I had wall space to fill).

I find that standard paperbacks fit nicely into shoe boxes. The problem now is that a lot of paperbacks are a bit larger. And I don't really buy enough shoes to keep up with all the books. And then people like Mr Coben's publisher decide to swap the title and author around so that it looks odd.

My wife had literally hundreds of paperbacks. We gave them all to the local W.I..

Hardbacks stack 4 to a layer.

Trade (the oversize ones) paper backs are a PITA.

On reflection I seem to recall mine might actually be banana boxes too, not apple as I said above. Books fit to perfection.

the "apple trays" are perfect if you're going to display them: I had an entire market stall kitted out with them to make "bookcases" when I first started out.
The "banana boxes" I was referrring to are the same footprint, but they are just tall enough to allow books to be double stracked - and then a lid put on.
