A GANG who stole £220,000 of ship propellers and tried to sell them for scrap were jailed for a total of 13 years.

Isn't stainless usually for fresh water and bronze for seawater?

Not from what I understand, well with regards outboards anyway. You really only get two materials for outboard props, aluminium and stainless. The stainless tend to be used for high performance but there is a big drawback to them, they are a lot stronger and if you hit something then you are more likely to cause gearbox damage. Aluminium, not being so strong will be the weakest link so it is what most go for.

I thought diameter was normally greater than pitch unless it's a fast/planing boat? It sounds unusual to say the least, and I'm wondering what vessel it was meant for.
Stainless is also unusual as most are obviously bronze.

Without a pic of the thing itself we cant know, over square props are common in high speed high power applications & can be surface piercing, Stainless is often used for these. Steam boat props are intended for low speed but extremely high torque, so if your engine is limited to 3 - 400rpm the only way is to go as big a diameter as you can swing with correspondingly heavy pitch, My late father in laws steamboat for instance had an 11 indicated Hp compound engine, but it could swing a 22" X 28" , when you linked it up into forward drive the big chunk of bronze whirled round & she just moved.
Incidentally her new engine is 25 Ihp so gawd knows what prop that will need!
