Moving Machines around the country - how do you do it ?

I'm looking for a lathe and I keep seeing stuff but it's miles away and I have no means of transporting the stuff. Ideally I'm looking at something like a short bed Colchester Student but even these are coming in at several hundred kg and heading close to a ton is not unusual. Taking them to bits and shipping them as parts is generally not a good idea so I'm left wondering what's the best way to ship something like a lathe a couple of hundred miles across the country ? Even when it gets here it will be difficult to get into the workshop/garage and I'd have to use rollers or something to move it in place off the drive but getting it here is the biggest problem.

How do you chaps do it - is there a huge pallet that can be used or do you go for tail lifts and Luton vans or a specialist carrier ? I would think that 650kg on a Luton Tail lift would be .

We bought a 2.7 Ton low floor four wheel trailer, its been invaluable, we recently used it to move some wood working machinery, all we had was a angle iron bogie with 4 castors on it and a trolley jack.
We are hoping to buy a big miller so will make a steel pallet to bolt it to and use a pump truck to move it, have a look on you tube for ideas.

Don't know yet - It has to be moved to my house when I get it sorted and that will need to dropped off as close as possible to the garage and I'm a skinny 10.5 stone weakling with no upper body strength and will be wimpmanhandling the lathe into the garage by myself

We have seen some horror stories from Shipley. People taking people's money and not doing the job.
Also some Shipley couriers even use us when they take on a job and realise they will lose money on it or their backload vanishes.
Just be careful. Bound to be plenty of good ones as well.

Luton vans usually have 500kg tail lifts.
Our network lorries are rated to 1000kg.

I like the look of landylift.

Machines can be easy to move with rollers/scaffold poles and bars, possibly chain blocks/electric winches as well if available.

Its prefectly possible for a couple of people to move a machine weighing 3 or 4 tons with minimum equipment and some planning.

I hired a sprinter van for a 300 km round trip, took 1000 kgs, to collect my mill.

Cost about €150 euros and €40 euros of diesel.

Since I've bought a 2.6 ton twin axle trailer.

My 1.4 ton lathe came 200 kms on a hired trailer behind an old Volvo estate, no problem.

I bought a trailer and moved my entire workshop contents with an engine crane and wooden dolly I made myself. I have chronic arthritis so if I can do it.....

me bruv used him to transport a toolroom lathe he bought and price was verry reasonable and good service

Nothing beats a HIAB but for long distances they get very expensive.
We moved a SB1024 from Dunoon to Kent for about £350. Too heavy for a tail lift so Moffett at collection. Then through the network as a double pallet. Chap had a telehandler to offload.
Hiab rate was about £1500.

I just use my trailer aswell, only carries 650kg but been enough unto now. And now I have a crane for the A frame now if i need it that takes 900kg i think .

i use it in a few places as it just unbolts and easy moved, not that heavy either. .

Shiply is pot luck i reckon, i have had a 50/50 for finding decent courier/driver etc. gave up as to many cowboys about.

I think I've moved 5 things with Shiply without any problems - but I am very careful who I choose - check insurance etc.

I've moved far more with Fizzy's mob - probably 50 or so, and again no issues.
