I'm looking for a lathe and I keep seeing stuff but it's miles away and I have no means of transporting the stuff. Ideally I'm looking at something like a short bed Colchester Student but even these are coming in at several hundred kg and heading close to a ton is not unusual. Taking them to bits and shipping them as parts is generally not a good idea so I'm left wondering what's the best way to ship something like a lathe a couple of hundred miles across the country ? Even when it gets here it will be difficult to get into the workshop/garage and I'd have to use rollers or something to move it in place off the drive but getting it here is the biggest problem.
How do you chaps do it - is there a huge pallet that can be used or do you go for tail lifts and Luton vans or a specialist carrier ? I would think that 650kg on a Luton Tail lift would be
