Any gearbox experts?

The spare capstan lathe I bought in Monday came with a gear box. I was hoping it was reversing but it looks like a two speed box with synchros?

It's stuck in one gear. It hasn't been touched in 20 years apparently so may be gunged up or broken. No evidence of water though so that's something.

Any ideas on how to unstick it? Is it a dismantle job - I've never taken a gearbox to bits but it looks easy on YouTube

Gear change mechanism.

Gears on the left are engaged. Cylinder with groove is all the way to left. Seems to be locked in place. I've tried gently tapping gear change cylinder around it's periphery and tried to tap it to the right but nothing doing.

The input and output sides have covers which can be removed. Which shaft should come out first?

I think I'd fill it with diesel and let it sit a few days to disolve any hardened oil.

Whats the brassy looking lever for on the front for? looks like it lines up with the groove in the cylinder, does it need to be pulled out?

I'll see your diesel and raise it to Kerosene, I've found it 'gets in' places better being that bit of a lighter liquid.
I also wondered about the lever on the front - is it some sort of interlock?

Difficult to tell from the pic, but the end looks uneven - could a bit have been snapped off, as in something jammed/seized?

Looks like a giant cone clutch. I'd warm it up a bit and hit it with a soft drift.

It's a vent I think, has a spring loaded plunger in it. Doesn't protrude into the main casting. That's actually the top, there is a drain plug in the opposite side and a filler to the side of the gear change lever.

It's entirely possible that old oil has gummed things totally solidly. My Harrison L5 was all gummed up when I got it, couldn't even move the carriage to start with it was stuck so badly.

I'd echo the leaving to soak for a good while then try and move things.

Make sure the selector leaver and the selector fork are moving as they should and not binding. Taking them apart isn't as easy as a video on utube.

Fork and lever are free it's the part the fork engages that is stuck to the left.

No that's just a vent. It's just the two shafts once the change lever cover is removed. Sorry should have taken a picture looking straight into the box.

That's just a sliding high low by the look of it, same as a harrison L5 gearbox. It will be splined shaft.

Try diesel first, couple of days, if it still doesn't move it will need stripping down

I need to get some diesel, first need to find a fuel can I'm sure there's one around here somewhere

Gentle tapping has been tried in original posts. I would gently tap it, a bit harder though!

It was was fairly gentle tap, didn't think to try a brass drift. Wasn't keen in forcing it as I don't really know what is underneath.
