What wire did you use to hardface migtig?

Just Mild steel, same as the blade. It works fine, and will be replaced after a lot of use.. so its cost effective untill we work out how to get the veryyyyy rusted bolts off and replace the blades (if needed) not even a hot blow torch will loosen these

I will look into getting some Hardfacing wire, but I think it takes more amps to lay, and is more pricey..
Will definetly get some if I go mobile.

Or maybe a box of hardfacing rods for your inverter....? Not so easy to grind down after though...

Cheers for the link, its not a nut, its a bolt which goes into the mower deck. We tried using a 2.5ft long wrench, with two people, no luck

My technique for stuck bolts is - if the bolt head'll take it - put a 3ft piece of scaff bar on your wrench. Tighten up the bolt first, then undo. Its that or drill out an re tap!

Its an M12 rusty bolt.. Im a bit worried about snapping it But cheers, thats a useful tip. I do happen to have a peice of scaffy pole in the shed.

One word: Explosives

Sometimes you can cut the head off the bolt, then beat on it a bit to release the pull on the threads. The use a stud extractor (the type used to pull studs out of heads.) But there will probably little to grab on.

My vote is the breaker bar, piece of iron pipe about 6' long and a prayer.

Another great idea for MIG use mate. Thanks for that.

I have used impact drivers with good effect. A hands on grease munky taught me to substitute this with a hammer and a punch - place pinch along circumference of the bolt, then drive the bolt aroung by sharp taps with the hammer. Simplicity rules!

To remove rusted-in bolts, my usual way is to heat it red hot, cool it immediately. My rationale for this cycle is that a differential expansion 'twixt male and female threads might help break em loose from each other. Then a few sharp hammer strikes on the bolt head, as if nailing into the female unit, before a slight tightening and then loosening.

I find both work well, as a Land Rover owner, YMMV. I assume you have tried Plus Gas and associated snake oils?.

It wasnt even worth trying I mean those bolts, they are there.. for good...

But I will kep your method in mind, cheers. Theres a little too much bolt there to get it red hot (and my Oxy kit is far too small for that). But im sure it works on smaller stuff

I did a cut with the mower today, and it cut very nicely.. piccy up later.

You can always use a stick to get your bolt hot if youve no cutting gear there, I do the heat up and cool down trick, I got involved spliting a track for a D10 cat bulldozer last year, we started having to get a pair of 2" pins out which were were blown through from end to end with the oxy propane, then the track adjuster pin which was around 6" di 1ft long, A day of solid gougeing , lovely, Never used a hardfaceing wire would go with the rods if i were you, a box of them will proberbly last you years not much call for it these days.

Any of the members on here have custom car parts that they made?

I have almost all my 3" exhaust pipes ready to be welded, i will be doing side exhaust, so it shall be quite neat to see when finished.

Here's my first project, it's never finished though. It's in the middle of having the 1.6crossflow (steam powered) removed and a 2 litre Zetec stuck in there.
Lots of bits of welding needed, new engine mounts, alternator bracket, coolant pipes, chassis chopping and bits replacing (space "issues") and the sump chopping and rewelding. I love it

The old engine is knackered really, needs a rebore and pistons/rings.

I had the Zetec in the cellar (I have no garage so the cellar is my workshop, it's OK until I need an engine upstairs ) ready for Winter, but I made a manifold for CBR600 bike carbs to go on the xflow, so I had to unplug the crankcase breather from the old manifold. When I did, the car disappeared in a cloud of blue smoke Bugger, so here I am fitting an engine during the best weather of the year, last year I missed it 'cos I was fixing crash damage, at least this time it's an upgrade and not just repairs

So, I'll probably keep hold of the engine for now, until the Zetec is running well, just in case I have so many crossflow parts, spare heads, block everything to make up another engine I think. Eventually I'll ask if anyone wants it on Locostbuilders, then if not, I'll ebay it I think, but whoever wins will need a large van or something

I notice quite a few of the guys on Locostbuilders have left the road at some point............too much power... lol..........it can`t be put down on the road in them lil things.
