It looks the same as the 'Laser' branded one I have at work, if so, it doesn't have auto-off so make sure you lock the sliding jaw and turn it off before you close the lid...

One can check the uniformity of thickness over a wider range.

Sorry - to digress for a moment, that reminds me - we had a "Head of Quality" some time ago, who had charge of "inspection" . .. one day he asks "what's the difference between an external and internal micrometer?" (We'll leave the obvious question of how you get to be Head of Quality for an engineering firm without some idea . . . ) - the reply he was given was "it's waterproof so you can use it outside . . ."

Looks tidy, and still not expensive.

It's a good price, I got it for home use. All the stuff I have at work has to pass calibration every six months, the Laser one I have, which looks the same as yours but was a good deal more expensive - over £50 I think, has passed calibration checks OK for the two years or so I've had it, other than forgetting it's not auto-off and having to keep replacing the battery it's nice to use and reassuringly weighty.

I got this as a freebi last weekend and can't decide if to fit it on my trailer or in the workshop. This I am thinking at the weld bench so I can lift stuff easier.

I could even bolt it there and use it other places if I use threaded rod epoxied in the concrete. Just unbolt and use on say the trailer.
I have a 2ton engine crane aswell but its a big awkward bugger

So today I was again - as far too often lately, SWMBO says - on a little expedition to rescue old hand tools.

Someone had bought an old house with barn at the foot of the Black Forest and found in the workshop there a mess of old tools with which he could not do anything.

One helps where one can ...

It was clear from the beginning that there are many solid parts of the well-known German tool manufacturers among them, but after coming home all the pieces from this catch had time, only a certain ratchet did not let me rest, I had a suspicion ...

This ratchet already came in reasonably acceptable condition, not nearly as daunting as many pieces ... but what exactly it is now was not immediately apparent.

The piece was doused in Ballistol oil and the mechanism immediately began to work: The direction of rotation could be changed and the detent worked in both directions, although with slightly different intensity in the noise between the directions.

Now the rotating wire brush was used, in my case simply a drill attachment in a hardware store bench drill.

I had recently switched to a wire brush with thinner, but more wires, to be more gentle on the workpieces.
I guess that works, but as I found out, thinner steel wires also go through the skin more easily when you slip ...

... and the shape of the ratchet made me slip more often ....

It was getting bloody!

But what is pain when duty calls the ratchet cleaned up quite nicely

How about that particular suspicion now!!?

Well, according to the illustrations on the site of the continuing company Hazet - still one of the leading suppliers of hand tools and workshop equipment - it is the first known version of the company logo.

I found a working ratchet from a quality manufacturer about 80 years old today and saved it from being scrapped ... I am a very lucky man.
