Grinding gears.

This is the video. In there he suggests you have to use a serface grinder. He then says you can't use a lather but at the same time says well you can but it's a little tricky.

Anyway what do you guys think.

Hardened gears presumably? I'm sure you could do it in the lathe but a surface grinder would certainly be easier.

why not open the video up instead of crapy facebook tracking

Easy do them in a lathe, cbn insert or similar would be required (ceramic probably unsuitable with the intermittent cutting but small cuts would likely be ok) the only problem I envisage with turning is the surface finish if there’s a specific requirement. The other problem would be the depth of the case hardening if they are case hardened, but thinking about it the centres of the gears wouldn’t be hardened surely? Maybe not an issue as the teeth will still be hard.
if I were to machine those I’d spin off 90% of the material in the lathe and flash over them on the surface grinder. Could even use a tool post grinder. I’d either use a couple of vee jaws in a vice and sit it on a parallel for the surface grinder, or take the chuck off with the work piece still in place and sit it on the mag bed, no specialist equipment needed really. certainly not 5 hours worth, sounds like he got ripped off

I hope you haven't bought the diff kit yet? The engineering behind that type is well known to be very shoddy, they don't work that well & even if it works it will seriously shorten the life of your diff! You are basically forcing the spider gears against the diff casing in a way they are not designed for.

Save up a few quid more & get a proper lsd designed for the job with friction plates. Kaaz do a good selection of diffs & cost a lot less than a Quaife or Tran-x. I've been running one in my sprint car & it's the best £600 I ever spent on it!

Definately specialist equipment needed if I was to use a surface grinder I don't have one. Lol
I do have a tool post grinder though.

So now to look for a CBN insert. For the lathe. The only ones I have fit my boring bars...lol

Ok on the basis he has purchased them already and does not have 600 quid for another diff , while he saves again he is intending to get them fitted for now.

So what's my best method of getting CBN inserts.

Do I choose a tool I already have and then get inserts to fit it?

or do I search for an insert and then see if I have a tool to fit it?

Nope it's from YouTube I've seen it when I've asked myself about this type of kit or better an homemade solution
I was thinking about putting a spring against the two gears perpendicular to the axle .
It's smaller and it would surely need much less "braking"power to lock the wheels

If you’ve got standard tipped tool holders there will be an insert that drops straight in instead of a carbide insert.
they do produce very good surface finished under the correct circumstances so you might even find a grind isn’t necessary depending on tolerance but a good lathe should yield an accuracy less than a thou. The beauty of cbn is you can take small accurate cuts unlike other cutting materials.

Which is the most commonly available lsd BM rear end? I have day dreams of building a trike, with a spare 350 Chevy motor I have, and as much as I’d like a Jag IRS they are both heavy, and hard to get parts for.

I would have thought a Jag IRS complete would have been a better option for a trike,the last thing you would want on a trike is an LSD because you would end up with no steering.

I have three medium case and one large case BMW diff all with lsd, I dont think I paid more than £150 for any of them, I havent got any small case diffs.. What size were you after?

Well cars need to go round corners too, so I’d imagine the ‘limited’ part covers that bit?
