24cc Rotavator pull start broken (Unobtainable)

Have the above, the recoil spring broke into about 20 pieces I have bought 4 different replacements but none of them fit one way or another. So I now have the nut with an odd thread that I ground the remains of the dog off. I was thing of one of these https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234100923319 welding a 6mm sockel upside down.Any other ideas welcome.

have a look at the old outboard engines ,,, pulley with a slot in and a loose rope with a knot , or without a knot if your that way inclined , works well . Granted no recoil action but if its easy enough started it would be grand.

just weld the nut to the shaft so it cant tighten and break the flywheel and use a socket driver in the drill to spin it over. i do that on a lot of my small engines as im lazy!

dam i wish i would have know this before i fixed up my petrol mower pull start

I don’t know what engines in there.

If it’s sound and a keeper would it be viable to re engine it with a mainstream model like a Briggs?

I did that for years on a big compressor as I couldn’t be arsed to buy a different breaker

put up a photo of the starter / broken bits, I'll have a rake through the old engine graveyard here and see if I have anything that would fit, or that could be adapted. If it's just a spring, you can adapt them easy enough, if you need to bend the ends, get them cherry red hot, and bend to suit. I do it fairly regularly, mostly successfully, sometimes they just snap off again, but usually ok....
