i wouldnt spend my money on that same with a phone many might but i wont
part of reason why i bought ds was for under 10s to play with while i was cooking tea it kept them occupied

Actually, Amazon do have a (bizarrely secret) gaming offering as part of Prime. If you have Amazon Prime then they offer a batch of content and free games every month:

I have a Lenovo P15v from work and my son really covets this for gaming. Specs are Core i9 8 core CPU, 32GB memory, 1TB NVME and a 2060 graphics card.
It's not light but it does have a lot of onboard ports having a full size chassis. Cheerfully runs 2 external 32" 4k monitors as well.
My boy uses the Steam platform above all others. He tried Amazon as we have Prime and he got a free trial but he says Steam is better. He also gave up his XBOX Gold subscription in favour of Steam.

He's 7, imho it ought to be you who's dictating what the 'per game' spend is going to be. Perhaps you need to explain to him that Grandad has limited money to spend on such things? Want doesn't always get.

what they want not what you can afford
so the present no longer means what it means
i wont buy it but buy what i want to buy many times the smaller items are better and more of
the parents want the game for the child buy it themselves in my eyes

I'm happy with my current selection and barely have enough time to play them as it is.
Just bought rainbow 6 siege and should keep me busy for a while. Haven't ventured online yet. A steep learning curve.
Not touched my vr games for about 6 months either. Really should get back into it.

Getting expensive for me with the kids gaming. Have to buy two copies of games so they can Lan. Well I might be joining in too.

Game I've played most over the last few years is Kerbal space program.
Looking forward to the new game if it ever arrives. Properly addictive and the mods kept it interesting
