12v battery options

I am in need of a decent 12v battery (upto 13.8v)
Around 20ah but must be capable of delivering 17-18 amps without going into some sort of protection mode
As light as possible, I know its a trade off between capacity and weight

Im out of touch with with current chemistry and options, cost is always a factor but size/weight/performance is more important

A couple of radios, only one at once so the transmit power draw will be high, but relatively brief

Its for my go-box, hence needing to keep it light

Does FG filled mean it will work in any orientation?

If its normal lead acid style then charging will certainly be simplified

I’ll put a pic up when I get home as I’ve one in the scrap. You can tip them over no bother as they work well in off road bikes. Not sure about ‘work’ on their side but they won’t spill.

The other option is gel tech but I am not sure enough about them to comment.

What about a small sealed lead acid type from an alarm backup?

Depending how much you are willing to spend, you could go lithium ion. I have this in my Westfield car and it can be mounted in any orientation and is very light. They are £250ish though…

I fit sealed lead acid to quads and they will work on their sides. TGB quads have the battery laid on its side in the battery box. 17 amp seems awful high, but as they are for cranking starter motors they will stand that draw for short periods. They are heavy though.

The BMW K1200LT battery is 12V at 20A so would do you a treat.

If small and light are the important things for you, then get an 18650 carrier and a suitable charger.

Pretty much any laptop battery, if you crack it open, will just be 18650 cells. That is an application where small and light are important and that's what they choose.

I believe some of the Tesla builds use them also.

Unless you want to get into BMS and all that, just shove them in a carrier and pull them to charge them. Somthing like the litokala (spelling?) 500 will charge them rapidly, and costs less than £20.

12v RC lipo pack. Power tool pack might be easiest to get and most durable, or make one up from li ion cells.
Realistically a motorbike battery wont sustain 20A for any length of time - either needs to be a big heavy car battery or a lithium based.

Certainly some of them were, so you are not wrong. Maybe it depends on the size of bike. Some bikes are over 1000cc.

As someone said above, LiPoFE pack for RC use or build a pack from 18650s if weight is an issue and the 250 for a lithium car battery is a killer.
Otherwise it'd be a sealed glass mat lead-acid from a large motorcycle, maybe.

You might not need 20Ah with a lithium as you can drain them more before the voltage drops off - 80% discharge or more is fine, whereas normal lead acids drop off so much after 50% they become useless.

Agreed good batteries but ones I have anyway rather heavy
