I needed some cellulose thinners, about 5 litres. I was surprised at the huge range of prices from around £9.00 right up to £99.99 for 5 litres! Even Zoro’s price was extortionate. I’d be feeling a bit Yorkshire knowing that £99.99 would be evaporating while I sprayed. I’m only spraying a metal cabinet, not a Rolls Royce. Can they justify such huge variations?

Its not all the same, quality ranges from gunwash to standard to finishing and then the brands.

Maybe the other ones but this I think would be hard to beat with the discount, £11 for 5L, delivered. Note that its cellulose and has about 5% of every different solvent known to man, listed innthe msds... So its probably ideal gunwash but not much good for paint.

+1 on the SWS stuff, that's a fair price and its reasonable stuff.

Where did you see that? Many online sellers will alter their listings/stock price to a ridiculous figure if they don't have stock but don't want to end the ad and relist.

If its cold workshop you are spraying in it would pay to use an anti bloom thinners, cellulose can be a pain this time of year.

To be fair I dont think I have used any decent thinners unless it's been supplied in kit form,

used standard gun wash in 90% of the stuff painted.

High flash nitro thinners will cost you ten times the price of gunwash but you will see the difference in the end job. 5 litres, what size is the cabinet ? We didn't use that much to paint a double decker bus.

It’s a 54 drawer steel cabinet so the surface area with all the drawers sides and runners is probably the side of a bus!! I did it the Yorkshire way and popped into the local body shop with a plastic can (that’s Irish) and got it filled for a fiver from their 25ltr drum.

I remember back when I was a kid, you could go to your local hardware store and they would have 50 gallon drums of various chemicals and thinners. Like you say, take a can with you and they would pump the quantity you needed. How life has changed.

Do you remember the two Italian sweet/ice cream shops in Cwmparc, Canales and Tortello's? Both would sell you however many scoops of ice cream you wanted, served into your own bowls.
Park Hotel and Tremain's would pump beer straight into your jug but only served from the 'Jug and Bottle', back in the day the only room in pubs that a child under fourteen could enter. I daresay it was the same in the Pencelli, the Dare Hotel and every pub the length and breadth of Treorchy too.

Jim Middleton, the ironmonger's? Putty and nails by weight, paraffin into your can by volume. Sole and heel leather for boots and shoes and leather trouser belting off the roll. Jim would punch holes and attach a brass buckle with bifurcated rivets. Everything a miner and his family needed.
We lived next door to Jim's, he had a 1,000 gallon tank of paraffin on the other side of our living room wall. When the tanker filled it, our house stank of paraffin for days.
Nobody ever complained.

I vaguely remember @BarrieJ, as my parents emigrated when I was small. I think Canales was across the intersection on Parc Road down from the Legion hill, and Middleton's was on Parc road across from the corner of Woodland Terrace ? My favourite haunt when I would visit years later was the Boathouse, where I learned about Strongbow; I liked it, and it liked me.

OTOH, I find Tetrasyl so-called thinners, containing everything but the kitchen sink, is superb decarbonising fluid for sticky piston rings and makes an excellent addition to ATF for Red Release.
