I am having one for a bench grinder table top, bit small for other worktops, a small bench drill yes, i have enough worktop now though.
Last stove i made it from 350mm x 250mm x 6mm box section and was great. I was thinking on making them for work shops and boat`y folk.
think stove is top of the list at minute. In time for winter

If I got my hands on some I'd turn it into a smithing magician and/or a 2x72 belt grinder. Nice thickness for bending, not too thick but strong enough to take punishment. Ideal thickness for cutting into little magnet locating plates too. Even a strong magnet won't hang on tight to a thin sheet of steel, 5mm will give a little neodymium something to really hang onto. I scatter plates around the workshop for fixing cameras to and dti's etc. Just screw them to the wall, ceiling and use magnets.

theres loads of models out there ed some use electric some dont
the top has a bypass plate and when closes the draw up the chimney pulls from the bottom of the stove
( this is my argument when in bypass mode your just pushing the fumes ( emmisions ) up and out the chimney just like a standard stove so no benefit with the clean air )
in downdraft mode it burns cleaner as its burning twice the top layer once then through the coals to the secondary air under the fire which is a gas
( secondary air is fed inbetween the top fire and bottem fire which is super heated )
2 times the heat has its benefits warms the room up very fast but the heat can be used for boiler reference

Thanks Gaz1 for the vid links, I like the Bionic heater, I have only ever had 2 wood heaters in my life, the first one when I was a kid, 60 years ago and that one smoked like a chimney in to the room every time you opened the door, (excuse the pun), but it was nasty. The second one was about 30 years later and that one also smoked when you opened the door but nowhere near as bad. However, once it got hot, which it did very quickly, you could turn the air intake down and the coals just smouldered all night and kept the house really warm and didn't use much wood from that point on, but still let a lot of smoke up the chimney. We used to use mainly hardwoods.
These downdraft stoves seem to burn more cleanly (no smoking chimney after heating up) but with the amount and speed of the flame shooting downward into the bottom chamber I would imagine that they would use a fair bit of wood? Can they be set to smoulder? Thanks.
