What for? a restoration project? use on motorways occasionally? a working heater in winter?

To the guys who say series all the way, Im curious why? is there a practical job that the series does much better than the defender in some way or is it just passion for the older one?

I have a 90TD, its defender shaped but sadly still has the old series engine in it. But I hope to eventually replace it with a tdi from something newer...

A friend of mine has just been up to borrow my engine hoist as he is dismantling a Series 2 88" that he's just bought. They are fitting a galvanised chassis and generally "doing it up" for his son to drive when he is old enough.

I just get more Smiles per hour from an old Series,but each to their own.

my series i want a defender as well for offroad but i wouldnt sell my series becaus you always get a grin driving it

Not mine, but I wanted to join in. You can tell what's going to happen from the photo.

This one had bad steering and unyielding leaf springs. I like the series, but better if they are more sorted than this one was.

What about a 101?
All the fun of a leafer. Just as cramped a driving position. Looks down on any other 4x4. Inaccessible gear stick.
Plenty of power from the V8 and loads of room in the back for all sorts of junk.
They also have a fantastic transmission driven winch if you can find one.

For an old style hard mans motor a series 2A Swb, probably loads of welding required, cart sprung rivet your backside kind of ride, even with new springs. A simple basic vehicle with built in air conditioning and water cooling for the driver/passengers....

Defender, the same towing capabilities as a series just as simple mechanically but with updated smoother suspension which increases comfort no end.

For a usable vehicle out of the two I'd go for the Defender with power steering, for a vehicle to use now and again, a Series 2A or 3 Swb.

If you have the space and the money, then both.



I've owned Series 1's 80",86" powered by 1600cc, 2000cc, 2.25 ltr and V8.

Series 2A/3, 2.25 ltr and V8.

A 110 V8 HT the best of them for power, towing, reliability, comfort and MPG.

Ive been into landrovers / rangerovers /discos, for 18 years now and still have several myself but this is my oppinium,,,,,
For comfort go for 90
Other wise series 2a or 3 fit parabolic springs and a 200 tdi engine from disco
can also change seats for bucket type this gives you a good allround motor
as for a heater fit a ebberspatcher??
