Fusion 360 sketching.

For the life of me I cant get my head round creating sketches in fusion that I can use to create a complete modle. I can only seem to sketch on one plane and after that my Brain kicks into detruction mode. Just can not get my head round it...so I cant actually use the dimension tad to visibly add demension from a sketch as in this video.

My box shows only one dimension as I just extruded the rest without using a sketch. but as the sketch is on one plane I cant see how to do it any other way. Any videos I find just dont sink in? Any suggestions.

I gave it my best shot a few months ago but the biggest hurdle for me was the tutorials are all out of date. None of them matched the latest version by some great margin and it is a totally non-intuitive interface. If you want to do something, you already have to have been shown, there's no way to work it out.

Then they changed it from being free to being restricted, losing all of the interesting stuff which makes me wonder if they will continue to chop features. So back to sketchup for me until some more tutorials emerge.

That about sums it up for me however. I can use it a bit. way more than anything else.

Its useful for simple stuff if I am 3D printing as I dont know anything about .3mf at all.

what are you using currently???. I need to switch as I lost my education licence due to the crackdown and there seems little point in using it for CNC as it does not allow rapids for hobby use..

All that aside I am led to belive sketching is similar if not the same in most packages.

What does that mean? Have you stopped using sketchup as well?

I am 100% sketchup currently but it has limitations for curved or spherical shapes. It is much more of a high speed sketch pad but there is a plugin for exporting to .STL so I can still print from it. I don't recommend it for anyone planning to use it for 3D printing or certainly CAD!

Well, tbh, I do recommend it but I shouldn't.

I think its days are numbered. I am still using 2017 version because it is a local only copy and no need to rely on a network/cloud interface.

Eventually Thingiverse and others will move towards .3MF and my version of sketchup doesn't do it. Can't easily use the 3d warehouse at the moment either. Got to go around the houses to import/export. I think Fusion is the way forwards but am hesitating on investing all that time with the risk of them reducing its "free" features even further. That is also my worry when you rely on being able to "login" to software to work with your own files...

Part creation is similar across the board as are the tools, you won't just pick up and cad package and make things..

Fusion is probably the cheapest to buy, but I don't think anyone is doing anything but subscription now so it's going to be on-going cost..

I don't know what onshape is doing with free/hobby use, but the package was looking useful a couple years ago

I am convinced if I cant get my head round the sketching thing I might stand a chance.

That and as screwdriver says most if not all the tutorials are for older versions.

Sketching is not hard really

make simple sketches to build up and modify a part, don’t make complex/detailed sketches

so for a table leg …sketch a simple square, extrude to depth to take top rail.

start new sketch for tapered leg. Extrude

new sketch … etc

Right click choose sketch then pick a plane.

First sketch is on a plane, subsequent sketches for that part will be on a face on the part you just extruded

Yeah thats what I cant get my head round. This explains more.

Such a simple sketch but it seems to contain loads of info.

SO when I enable dimensions in sketches it only shows one dimension. Now its not important in what I need now BUT if I can get my head round how to sketch in 3D and add dimensions so I can alter them and or create a model from them it will help me immensely in the future. (I think)

You need to focus more on the language. A drawing is not a sketch.

You draw a square and extrude it to make a cube, then click new sketch and click on the face you want to sketch on
