I didn't know they used Hydrofluoric Acid in chrome plating. That is seriously nasty stuff, only time I've come across it was in wafer fab sites.

Its used in weld pickling paste for stainless steel.

Speaking with one of my customers the other day that had hundreds of parts chromed a year, from next year, general chrome platers are going to be forced to use trivalent-chrome. Apparently, in trials run by their platers two years ago, it's is absolutely pants and no good for automotive parts let alone exhaust parts.

Hard chrome will be done away with in 2024. Bear in mind there is no cost effective, economical or environmentally friendly method to reproduce the properties of hardchrome. HVOF is touted as being as good, but it's 2-3x more expensive!

There's not much on the internet about it, it seems to be a European regulation.
