Are missing disk stone guards a fail?

Some of the Lancia guys failed due to rusty rear shields - removed them - and then failed due to missing components! Was a few years ago.

I just took mine off - so my MOT place never knew they were there in the first place - much like the steel shield under the petrol filler pipe - a good place to lodge an inch of damp silt and rot away.

I personally find that on the vauxhalls we have/had that i get only 24,000 /2 yrs out of the rear discs no matter what make of disc or pads i fit and as we have 3 identical vauxhalls i've tried many different makes and all rot the discs none are better than others.

Drive it harder - the brake balance means that the rear pads are not cleaning up the disc surface properly with only light use, the downside is obviously more brake pad wear.... it's just a compromise whichever way they end-of-life.

Some of the big front disc vectras only have a little guard which offers some protection for the the bottom ball joint but none for the disc it self.

I hope not, I removed them from tbe Landrover because crap gets wedged between them and the disc whem
N offroading and it makes an annoying noise.

Let me say i drive with gusto unlike the other half and it makes no difference to the rear brakes i even drive the other halfs to clean the rear brakes but it makes no difference.

Try doing a few 'J' turns then - that will give 'em a good workout!

Well i'm putting bigger brakes on the front in the next week or so before getting it teapot tuned maybe then

No...

Missing exhaust heat shields near fuel tanks and pipes are thou.

Seems to be a big earner for main dealers, always seems to be the case that new discs are required at same time as brake pads, the discs are as much of a consumable as the pads.

They always were a consumable, but yes, they tend to be changed every other set of brake pads.

Pug 106 similar - and it seems to work as its still on the original bottom arms - many discs though.


In a previous life we used to make chilling chambers for people like Visteon (spun out of Ford) to cool discs and drums,as well as machines to clean and dry them post machining.

Other half never complained about her VW Polo . . . I drove it and it pulled massively one way . . . closer inspection revealed a seized front caliper! She never drove it fast enough or braked hard enough to notice! That and the snapped front spring!

Mind you, my Lancia passed an MOT immediately after purchase with a seized front and rear caliper on opposite corners! Can't go on the rollers, so it went out for the calibrated swinging brick test and it obviously pulled up square enough, hard enough.

Discs...I park in the station car park in my old Mondeo and look at the posh cars with their shiny discs and painted / colour coded calipers.

Are some discs on posher cars stainless?

Is there any magic spray like ACF-50 that can be applied to cheap discs to stave off the rust?

Some of them come coated which reduces corrosion on the non contact areas, as on the one I fitted below. The brake pad wears off the coating upon first contact but the remainder stays on.

Just had mine Changed (Skoda Octavia) Discs & pads Brakes were pulsing, severe corrosion on inside of discs, 63000 miles.

Dacromet was what we used to use back in the day when I worked at one of the major OEM disc manufacturers. Think its banned now due to all the nasty stuff they keep finding in all these old industrial chemicals and processes.
On a side note, the minimum thickness tolerances make me chuckle. During manufacturing, some of the dimensional tolerances were down to 5-microns !
On a cost related side note, I think were were making them at a loss in the end, selling them back to the OEM assembly plants for $0.50 each ......Goes to show how much the main stealers were pocketing

Exactly this, I think original discs are worth skimming if possible, new discs seem to wear out quicker than the air freshener.

Especially as the 'new' driving technique seems to be brake for EVERY corner ,oncoming vehicle ,pedestrian ON pavement, message sign etc . it must drive the heavies mad!
