Stained Glass

Amongst the varied group we have here, anyone up on stained glass?

We have a side panel on our hall to living room door that we would like to replace. We have a design that we'd like made up, its fairly simple art deco-esque design.
Proper stained glass is likely out i'd think due to cost and it needing to be toughened ideally. So thinking overlay stained glass onto a toughened panel?

To do the design justice and look good fro both sides, I guess id need lead applied both sides?

I fancy having a bash, but not sure, anyone done any?

You can get copper foil that you attach to the edges of the glass, then you use solder to fill the seams.
google tiffany lamps, it is quite a popular hobby.

When dad was alive he did stain glass using the foil as well as lead. To wrap the glass place it on another piece of glass and use a forming stick to fold it over then you can flip it over and fold the other side. The edges however should be smoothed with a wetted diamond grinder depending on fit/shape of the piece.
This lamp was formed on styrofoam.

Had a leaded light installed in a double glazed unit last year.

I'd check Google locally for a specialist. Usually a few around.

I kind of fancied having a go myself...
The design was produced by a young artistic family member sometime ago, who was taken at a young age.

I think the problem with doing it yourself, is the cost of the tools, plus the glass, coloured glass is quite expensive.

There's a guy who has a shop at the top of our estate. I approached him once about something I wanted making, price stopped me but one thing he suggested was he paints the glass and then they bake it on, forget what he said the process was called, he does it and is quite common for stained glass guys to do from what he was saying, it looks like stained glass when done but is cheaper to do, might be an option for you.

I’ve been looking into this and have started doing a bit of reading.

Dare I mention it, even looked at some youtube videos.

The starting trick seems to be to scale up your design to actual size then use the lines as your cutting guide for the glass.

The bit I haven’t grasped yet is how much offset is required on the glass to accommodate the lead

I saw that episode, the guy doing the repair used sections of the original glass and re cut them to use in different places and then used other glass he had “in stock” to complete he repair.
moral is, never throw anything useful away.

Alternatively use adhesive lead strip both sides and glass paint

Get the stick-on lead then paint the glass sections for your design? Maybe cheating but a pal did it and it was quite effective.

I bought a 'kit' about 10 years ago when I built my conservatory ...can't remember what it was called though! I bid £3 for it on EBAY and won ...girl selling was an agent giving it up ...huge amount of stuff .....used it a few times ..sold it for £70 ...bit of a bargain

Anyway, it was easy to use came with stick on lead and loads of different coloured paint that gave the stained glass effect.... try googling it ..should be still around.... The pics show it now ( 10 years old) but still look OK .....

My father used to do stained glass as a hobby, he taught me the basics.

He would draw a full size copy of the design in marker pen. Laying the pieces of glass on top he marked them on the inside edge of the marker pen line every time. So the offset was the thickness of the line, so around 2/3mm

I think the problem with doing it yourself, is the cost of the tools, plus the glass, coloured glass is quite expensive.

You can use the adhesive coloured cellophane(?) sheet, with adhesive backed lead strip. You cut the shapes out of the plastic, apply to the glass, leaving a slight gap between the pieces, so that the lead can adhere to the glass itself, then apply the lead & use a solid/rubber roller to press it down. It looks quite good when done correctly. Takes a bit of practice, but readily doable.

This is certainly true, but have a go. Try something simple and get a feel for what you need to do

The gap would depend on the lead edging your using so measure the internal part of the I beam.
For scaling Dad used a projector we had as kids that places over the (lighted) pic and is reflected though the focusing lens.
