Whatsapp scam

Possibly, like other people on here, we use a closed WhatsApp group to contact family members, its a useful way to make family arrangements & keep up with everything going on.
Yesterday, My wife received a message from our youngest daughter saying she had been having trouble with her phone & needed to transfer £2000+ to a bank account (details included Acct name, sort code & Acct No) but because of the change of phone she couldn't complete the transaction (in her business transferring such sums is not unusual). The message was followed by further messages urging the transfer be made asap & even requesting a photo of the transaction details.
When we both examined the message, it was written in a style my daughter would never use & the sum was written with the £ sign at the wrong end (i.e. 2000£). Clearly not from somebody whose first language was English.
A phone call to my daughter confirmed what we suspected, no such message had been sent.
The details were sent to Actionfraud.
Please,be aware the scum are out there trying to relieve you of you hard earned cash.

That one has been around for a while.
I got one last year and it turns out that the sender had hacked my contact's email account and sent the 'appeal' to every one on his Contacts' list. Not the phone story, but that he'd broken down away from base and needed cash to square the garage bill.

Similar one has been on messenger. They were asking for £300 but only contacted family.

You do have to be so careful. I think I would ring my daughters first if they asked for money via any app as they know I don't do mobile banking (for that reason!). My wife will only send money to an account she has the details of as my daughters ask her on a frequent basis

My wife did nothing to get into the scam, she got a message in the group which appeared to be from my youngest daughter, saying she was stressed because she had to change a faulty phone to a new number & she was in the middle of an urgent transaction to purchase an item, which because of the phone change wouldn't go through (implying it was a security issue). The request was for us to complete the transaction & she (by implication my daughter) would reimburse the following day. A situation not uncommon to most parents.
The follow up messages to urge the transaction go through quickly are I believe common scam tactics to distract you from checking the transcatikn is real, I can only speculate on why they needed a photo other than to get our bank details for further thievery.

How did the perp get into the WhatsApp group? Someone in the group must have added them surely? I don’t know of any other way except by an existing member adding a new person.

As far as I am aware my daughter did not invite anybody into the family group, I am assuming somebody hacked their way in. We’ve blocked the new number that was quoted in the scam, hopefully yhat is the last we see of them. None of the conversations refer to anything monetary, Im assuming it was just pot luck they hacked into our group.

But a WhatsApp account is tied to a mobile number, or at least it used to be prior to faceache buying it. 2 sims in my phone but WhatsApp only works on one.
I don’t doubt it’s possible, just no idea how.

Thanks for posting that, I had no idea how it worked. I also didn't know they did 2sa so I will set that up now
