RS components

With the building boom here industrial companies and their suppliers are getting moved further and further out of Dublin. One of the few engineers suppliers left thats handy to get to, are RS components. Haven't used them in years, looking on their website, their prices seem a bit high. Are they or is it just me ?

SOME of their prices are surprisingly reasonable, I've always found, but I still check CPC Farnell - they do tend to be dear but they gotta lotta stuff!

IME RS have always been on the pricey side but they posted orders quickly and for free, and had stuff in stock. It's been a few years since I last used them.

RS France are not the cheapest, but we ordered some gas pipe olives as they couldn't be sourced locally, at 4pm, and 10am the following day they were delivered.

I was shocked.

By courrier, obviously. But still utterly amazing.

I’ve used RS for decades, since about 1987 when I bought my first electronics toolkit. Pricing is fine, always has been. They can look expensive compared to all the modern cheapo rubbish out there nowadays but quality is right and the price is right for that quality.

I just had a notion in my head they were very expensive, that and i was spoiled by buying gear cheap off ebay uk. Since brexit the prices are mental, so i no longer can afford to buy from there.

This is it, how many companies keep good stock levels, or, well, the client can wait...

My steel stockists isn't cheap, but I found myself thinking they must stock take this anually, 500 grand? Just in steel ?

RS have always been slightly pricey but they are also pretty reliable for next day delivery on one of the widest ranges of stock out there.

In other words they are worth the extra you pay.

Been using them since they were Radiospares - probably around 1972. Latest delivery coming tomorrow (Arduino Mega 2560 R3) !

The advantage of RS as far as I'm concerned is that they usually actually HAVE the stock and can deliver free the following day.

My dad often looks at me perplexed when I call them rs often replying oh radiospares

As everyone says not always the cheapest, but for me here in NZ local cable supplier $849 + 6 weeks wait, RS $276, 7 days from the UK and New Zealand compaines wonder why people buy overseas?
My dad always said doesn't matter how cheap it is, if they haven't got it when you need it.

And of course RS have an excellent team if you need help or advice on any item they sell and it's 'free' ( built in to the price obviously )

In the days when I was running my own business (a few years ago) I always took the view that RS was a bit pricey but you could find stuff quickly and absolutely depend on them to deliver quality stuff on time from their enormous range of products. 10 out of 10 from me.

In my experience rs are fine for some stuff, but you get other bits (with greater frequency than other firms, it seems) where someone has just pulled a random number out of the air and multiplied it by 5.

Again other firms do this, but rs has certainly caught my attention a number of times for it, more than others I believe.

RS for electronics components tend to be cheaper than Farnell. CPC is part of Farnell but tends to stock surplus stock.

Bear in mind they are primarily an electronics distributor and tools etc., are extras they tend to stock.

If you consider just how much stock RS holds, it's justifiable to charge a premium, in my view. I remember their catalogues from the 1970s, twenty or thirty pages long. The last set that I had from them around the mid 90s there were eight huge volumes.

RS you pay for the convenience,not the part. If you have the time to search,you will always find what you want elsewhere at a lower price. But,like they say, time is money……

Ex RS employee here (maintenance).
RS stock a massive amount of parts. I worked at Corby, the head office. The warehouse is massive with miles of conveyor on the picking system over four storeys. There is also 16 high bay crane picking systems in a dedicated warehouse. There's packing and distribution as well.
At Nuneaton there is a fully automated warehouse.
The costs are equally huge, the electric bill was frightening!

Electronics are a very small part of sales and have been for some time.

They are a bit expensive. However you can get discounts on higher value items. Or negotiate a long term deal like we did, we do spend 50-100k with them though...
