Music at work

This new job is one that i have been working with folk all day side by side, well in a workshop not hand in hand lol. There are around 12 of us plus one foreman and one boss.

What i find odd is that the foreman does not like music that much, maybe certain channels like Smooth FM, but not to loud, enough to hear it properly. so he doesnt allow it. Now when he is not in we get all sorts on and the moral goes up twice fold, they are a great bunch of lads always happy but when we get to play what we want and that we cam hear it we all love it even more.

Is it a bad thing to have tunes at work nowadays, i ask i find it odd that things that are good at work for the workers is not allowed.
I am normally working alone in all my other jobs as mainly been a driver and quit enjoy the new job.

Whats your thinking on music at work, i just love my music.

I understand the too loud but then its a engineering workshop so never quite.

So a new guy starts . . he's 18 . . . he turns his nearest radio to mega-death-rap-hip-hap-trance station . . . he's delighted. As are the two youngsters the other end of the shop who either go turn it up so they can hear it, or tune theirs to it as well . . .

You, who I'm guessing might not be into such genres, are stuck in the middle . . . are you so keen to have the "music" on now?

It causes much friction between work mates - to the point of coming to blows, so the easiest answer is not to have it, or to require it low enough not to bug people.

Or due to the work, someone wants it louder . . . and louder . . . so you now miss the shouted instruction/warning/telephone.

Radio 1 turned up so loud it distorts. That was lesson two in my plumbing apprenticeship. Lesson one was tying knots in electrical cables.

Seriously, it's either my mp3 player or R3, otherwise nothing. The works van radio can find R3 or Radio Nan Gael, nothing else.

The PRS people became a real pain a few years back. So much so that the CEO got lawyers involved in the end. Everyone who wanted to listen to music did so using their own music collections and headphones/ear buds. If I hear music in shops, the chances are I'll make a hasty exit, especially if it's banal, which is most of the time.

If i am working on my own then i have Classic FM or BBC Radio4 Xtra on, or if the IOM TT is on, Manx Radio. What i had to suffer listening to pure bilge during my apprenticeship was beyond human endurance . It wasn't actually the tradesmen, but the general ops they took on, they were all dope heads who loved that Trance muck, its an insult to call it music. The sort who goes around perpetually sleepy and stinking of rancid socks from the stuff they smoke.

Someone finally complained and all radios were verboten.

We put a machine in at Ford Halewood many years ago. We had to do some serious work to get it under their required soundlevels.

You couldn't hear it even without any additonal measures due to the mega speaker system strapped around one of the factory stanchions blasting out something someone told me was music . . .

I used to know the Halewood site very well. That “noise” device was as a result of the unions.

There's a lad at work who seems to think that everyone would like to listen to his rap/ grime /drill music noise from halfway across the warehouse. He was informed that no-one else likes it and to turn it down in very basic terms. I used to work in a place and had my radio tuned to what I liked to listen to but you couldn't hear it 5 paces away from my bench.

If I'm on my own in the workshop, or on site then planet rock will be on, and usually quite loud.

If I'm working with anyone else then we can find a station that we are all happy with.

Happy worker =nice job
Music can be a distraction both in positive or negative manner.
Too high Volume could cause you to not pay the right attention about what's happening around you.
The right volume is actually relaxing and might improve your productivity because you're not thinking about personal problems .
I always have my playlist on play while working , but only if it's possible.
And I also sing while working .
Sometimes people love to ear me , some others don't.
Just be respectful of others.

I just use my in-ear earphones, but I only have one working so I can always hear what's going on..

Hearing is still perfect according to the test I just did

They change the goal posts as you get older. I’m in the 55 - 60 age group and the last test i did said my hearing was perfect for my age. It’s far from perfect

Is Radio Rama Back to Back still going?!?!

after six months of that I was ready to harm myself!! They only had about 5 CDs I think all I remember from that station is endless black horse and the cherry tree by whatever her name is

Personally, I would hate the radio on all day to the point I would be looking for another job. How the workers in shops stand it, I don’t know, some I go in I find it physically painful its so loud.

I used to have Planet Rock on all day at work but not so much now. You now get 1 song followed by 8 adverts and then another song. I don't know how the DJ's get time to say anything.

Off topic - rumour has it, lifting gear supplied, time taken to use it prevent reading of newspaper in between lifting operations, so manual lifting carried on . . .back injury resulted . . . compo obtained . . . unions . . .hmm!

I don’t about this one but heard plenty of other stories. A team fitting interior carpets to the escort claimed it was making so much dust it was daring thier lungs. They showed me a sample of dust they had collected in a day, I did sampling with recognised science. They didn’t believe my results so I had to do it again with union observers. I found fibrous dust clumps in the sampling kit that couldn’t be sucked up with the most powerful vac in the world. I know they had interfered with my kit but I couldn’t point any fingers. The whole expertise was repeated a third and fourth time with 4 of us present. Surprise surprise dust levels were right were I expected them to be, I.e not an issue

Reason for this, that team wanted to work in a different area of the line so they could be closer to thier mates. It didn’t work

really depends on what I'm doing, if I need to think / concentrate, then I need more peace & quiet these days, if it's just general work in the workshop then music on, good rock blasting out as necessary..
Then again I'm on working on my tod, so it's easy to say what music plays, not sure if I was in a group environment, I'd be able to put up with the choice of others

It was banned on the shop floor of my last place along with earbuds etc. The offices were allowed earbuds as meetings could be held at the desk via zoom etc. Everyone used that as an excuse to listen to music whilst working. It created an even bigger 'them & us' situation. It was not resolved by the time I left. The last year I was there I was working from home so I had music on most of the time and sat around in just my shorts

At my place we all like the same type of music, guess that lucky, we put on 80s/90s when foreman is out. Its not much the loudness more the type here. some for the welders have BT earphone gadgets as they cant hear the music played.


It look like a big mix of what folk prefer to listen to, or not listen to at all. I love all kinds of music.

I worked somewhere once that was going to ban radios in the vans, this was due to a pillock driver that reversed into another work van while the boss was shouting to him to watch out, music in van so loud he couldnt hear the boss and hit the van.

I can honestly say i would of walked for another job if they removed radios from the vans. Its bad enough the van i drive now for work is near as dam useless, brand new van with no aerial so radio is always cutting out and DAB is naff. they removed the aerial when they fitted the curtain side. So got a BT speaker and use my phone when in the van.
