Music at work

This new job is one that i have been working with folk all day side by side, well in a workshop not hand in hand lol. There are around 12 of us plus one foreman and one boss.

What i find odd is that the foreman does not like music that much, maybe certain channels like Smooth FM, but not to loud, enough to hear it properly. so he doesnt allow it. Now when he is not in we get all sorts on and the moral goes up twice fold, they are a great bunch of lads always happy but when we get to play what we want and that we cam hear it we all love it even more.

Is it a bad thing to have tunes at work nowadays, i ask i find it odd that things that are good at work for the workers is not allowed.
I am normally working alone in all my other jobs as mainly been a driver and quit enjoy the new job.

Whats your thinking on music at work, i just love my music.

I understand the too loud but then its a engineering workshop so never quite.

I have a set of 3m ear defenders that have the radio and Bluetooth in. I wear them all day. It’s usually too noisy to hear the radio anyway but it’s on.

You can get better ones with DAB but they are spendy.
Might be a solution for you? They are designed for the workplace so you can have them so loud you can’t hear warnings etc etc. I’m pretty deaf (engine rooms) and they are just about fine for me on max.

Personally, I would hate the radio on all day to the point I would be looking for another job. How the workers in shops stand it, I don’t know, some I go in I find it physically painful its so loud.

It may be that the PRS gits have been after the boss for money. We had that in on of the kitchens, had to remove the radio and it wasnt a small fee they were after

I dont bother with music whilst I work in the shed or drive anymore. An acceptable level of volume for me isn’t what others tend to accept. To give an example, I can be listening to YouTube videos through head phones. My kids and wife can hear what I’m listening to as well

Officially radios are banned on our sites

Unofficially if it isn't offensively loud its ok, ear buds are banned though

If I walk in and radio one is blasting from one end of the building to the other I turn it off, if however pop master is on that is acceptable

Some people love it, some people hate it, and that's just volume, not accounting for taste and genre.

radios were almost banned outright one year in the fitting shop, as an old machinist almost came to blows with one of the younger lads who had the volume higher than he liked.
Since he retired, everyone is a lot more chilled about music and most people like something playing all the time. HR even bought the proper licences for playing music in public places, as they rightly pointed out, it's cheaper to go along with it and keep everyone happy and productive.

Our office has music at a low volume all the time, I like it personally, its more like background noise than anything but it seems deathly quiet without it.
The fab shop has a huge old hifi system that sounds fantastic, they crank it right up when it gets noisy in there.

One thing that simplifies things on our site is that carrying personal phones around site is totally forbidden, so bluetooth speakers/headphones/earbuds etc just aren't seen/heard anywhere.

you wouldn't like our office then. Although we switched to Absolute radio a year back and it was a huge improvement.

our radio is turned down to the point where you can't really make out what people are saying, just the tunes themselves. Not sure I could put up with actually listening to him...

I listen to R4 or the World Service on a DAB Roberts radio when I unlock in the mornings in the office - as the phone starts ringing - I turn the radio off...

Is it me or is DAB only really good for BBC channels?


Everytime I get into one of my vans - the younger lads have tuned in all sorts of "carp" - I just turn radio off or retune it if I have a long journey.

When these lads are in the workshop I have found them an old Yamaha TV soundbar and they bluetooth stuff off there phones thru it. Volume remote is velcro'ed to the office wall. I don't think I have ever had to turn the volume down on this.

This works very well - they listen to what they want - and when I am in there on my own - it is not on....


Side note: Maynot actually do me any harm to listen to some "younger music".

We put a machine in at Ford Halewood many years ago. We had to do some serious work to get it under their required soundlevels.

You couldn't hear it even without any additonal measures due to the mega speaker system strapped around one of the factory stanchions blasting out something someone told me was music . . .

I just use my in-ear earphones, but I only have one working so I can always hear what's going on..

Hearing is still perfect according to the test I just did

I love nearly all music - except for RAP!
Much too busy with phones to use it in work and never seem to bother when I am on my own playing with my machines. Perhaps I will have to rig something up.
