Quenching in brine is as old as blacksmithing. I have no idea why they do it but its a well known process.

Please pardon my ignorance, but that’s the first time I’ve seen a reference to salted water for quenching, why is the salt added?

It allows the water to be colder than 0Deg C.
It was something a blacksmith once told me, it allows the metal to be quenched and become harder.

Tig in a hole is difficult to start! Enjoyed that, I am hoping I got enough heat in at the bottom.

I also welded up the spanner, less successfull.
I used the amazon foot switch and the original torch with a 3.2mm tungsten as I wanted to try it, amps too high, made a melty mess. It will need some grinding and filing.

I’ve always used the stream outside for a quick quench, or old engine oil for a slower one

Not today but yesterday I knocked these up for the better half's birthday.
Didn’t really mean to make 3 different versions but it took me a couple of goes to get the shape of the petals close to right.
I used a tea spoon for the former, I might even make a proper form out of steel because I'm not there yet.
I thought I'd buy some tulips and take them apart for a pattern but apparently filling stations don’t stock tulips at this time of year.

Did I mention they are supposed to be tulips?

We have 4 tractors and the combine setup with autosteer, combine shares a system with one of the tractors though.

I'm not expecting you to quote figures as it's none of our business, but that must represent huge capital investment - yet Joe Public still expects cheap dairy and other food products, e.g. £1 for a litre of milk or a loaf of bread.

It's came down in price recently, we have 3 different levels of system, one system is accurate to approx 20cm pass to pass and no repeatability, that's about 10k to setup and no ongoing costs, we've 2 systems at 5cm pass to pass and no repeatability, again 10k to setup and about £400 a year per system subscription, best system is 2cm pass to pass accuracy and repeatable, 12k setup and £500 a year for subscription.

A shed move, would have been easy (er) but its lined with OSB / Ply so deceptively heavy, plus the small matter of a wall in the way. Why, well clearing space for exstension, and need the storage for the materials.

A prop and stern tube for a customer. They are for a type 26 for those that are interested.

Needs a bit more work. There’s 2 in the set plus rudder etc

Neighbours will be fine but someone else will prob report it, but then as it took me 14 months to get planning at appeal so I expect I can string the process out till I am finished, or put some pram wheels on it and claim its a caravan with shed like tendencies :-)
