Box section sizes

Thinking about modifying the ladder rack on my trailer, or building a new one out of box section in order to make it removable. I'd like it to be able to slot into place into a suitably sized section. If I made it from 40mm x 40mm x 3mm box section, what suitable sizes are available with which to make the receiver? Obviously wanting as close a fit as possible.

The problem is the seam inside the box if you get tight fitting. Probably better to make your own from angle.

you will soon wear tired of fitting it and removing it and in end you will just leave it on in the first place been there done that and it really does become a chore to do often

But if it is a receiver for a post, it probably won't need to be more than 150mm long, so removing the seam only needs a tool that can reach 75mm.

Is it a trick question? 50 x 50 x 5 will be 40 x 40 internal.

Might be a tad too tight , if you have two posts need to lift it out squarely !

I always use 50x50x4 for sleeving 40x40.

Depends a lot on the box section, there is variance between suppliers and tolerances, and the seam can also cause you issues with sliding fits. If you want a nice tight fit you really have to have the bits to hand to try it.

Where do you normally get your steel from? go down and ask if you could try one inside the other

Thought that might be the case. Had hoped that someone could say that A size box fits neatly into B size box. Will have to experiment next time I'm getting steel.
