Paint removal…?

So, a bare metal respray is needed. What is the most effective method of stripping the paint back to the bare steel?

I have heard that mechanical abrasion could put some heat into the panels and potentially distort them? Should I use a chemical paint stripper instead, if so which one?

I have got into the "polly strip" discs for paint removal, they seem to be very easy on the metal, quite quick and last quite fairly well.

I found them good on flat metal , details and curves might not be so good I have only used them on flat stuff.

be carefull youre not getting big panels too hot with a disc...middle of roof etc

Thanks for the info there Steve I’m guessing you’ve used the starchem stripper a few times? Is it very aggressive, paint usually comes in one application? To be used on 2k direct gloss.

I started with Starchem, it took multiple applications and made a total mess, never again. Poly disc all the way for me, just don't dwell in one spot and you get no heat build up.

Starchem mess.

It took two or 3 applications to get to this stage.

Much faster but best done out doors due to the dust.

DA was just too slow, I gave up on it at this stage and changed to a poly disc.

its one of the better ones available...as above it can take more than one application if theres multiple layers of paint

Any kind of sanding will make a hugely dusty mess, stripper makes a gungy mess.I prefer starchem stripper as I'm painting and stripping in a small garage that I'm unable to get really clean before painting.

Abrams Black Poly Discs ordered. Yeah, I can’t say repeat applications of stripper on large areas appeals, the dust I can deal with, working outside, no problem.

Im guessing the black discs are more abrasive than the blue?
