Brass flavours

Hi guys

Looking for information plz.
I am trying to machine a electrical contract (out of a brass type)

The end of the contact gets rolled over to hold it in place.

Much like a eyelet rivet from a old style shoe trainer

The brass I am using (not sure what flavour it is) keeps splitting

The original ones mushroom nicely

What brass type should I be using plz

I'd be looking at using 70/30 copper/zinc brass, which is also known as cartridge brass (and grades like cz106), which is good for electrical connections and ductile. you can get it in sheet, but may not be able to get it in machining sections

if you're using a leaded grade of brass to help with machining (cz121 in small quantities), the lead may be causing the cracking as the lead alloys the swarf to form small chips.

Is the rolling over of the end absolutely necessary to its correct function or just a fast and cheap way of assembling the original item when it was produced in the thousands?

If it is not necessary to secure the pin in that manner, maybe a T-shaped cylinder loctited or press fit in would do it. Or drill and tap, make a slotted screw that goes in with loctite and then file the slot off once assembled.

Make it as a hollow flanged cylinder with enough of a notch to clear the cable securing screw and loctite it into the rectangular bit. If the tapped hole can be a through hole, loctite it in with no notch and then run the tapping drill and tap through it once the glue has set (drill the rectangular bit before installation as it will guide the drill). You might need to grind off the point on the tap.

Supreme skills way would be to put an external thread on the flanged cylinder and an internal thread into the rectangular block.

What are you using or how are you trying to flare it? Compared to the adjacent connectors, the new one looks to have a lot of excess material which might not be helping it spread.
