Just bought a Suzuki Carry pickup. Used to have a Honda years ago and it was brilliant - carting sand and ballast form the local quarry, filling it up with bricks and blocks etc. I’m pretty sure that I’m looking back through rose tinted specs though! Picking it up next weekend, so the next post will probably be asking how to make it go faster / quieter / less bouncy / more roomy and or more civilised. Or even worse, where to get a replacement engine / gearbox / back axle or how to weld up bodyshell.

i had a friend who had the van version, it was slow as fook, in fact i could walk faster , up hill backwards whilst dragging a bull elephant behind me...still a fun little van tho

I looked at buying one to build a miniature Matador body on it. The price certainly put me off that project.

At 6'2" and 16st I doubt you'd even fit in the back .

The Bedford Rascal version had a big lump of something along the back of the chassis rails, primarily to stop it tipping onto its nose under heavy braking but it took some of the bounce out!

These ones do Stoppies, don't they? Bedford took all the fun out of them.

Don't forget your safety boots with steel toecaps. You need them as your feet are the crumple zone.

The Honda Acty TN500 is mid-engined, with half of a Gold Wing GL1000 under the floor in front of the rear axle. I have two of the panel van version, they can be cornered flat out ( i.e. 40 mph ). They do not tip onto their noses during heavy braking ( because the drum brakes don't do "heavy" ).

I was passenger in a rascal cornered hard. Nearly sh1t meself!!!

They look cool though. Wouldn’t buy one as I’m bigger than the average Japanese person but they look useful.

My Dad had the Honda Acty 360 pickup, used it to deliver milk and when that rusted out bougth the bigger engined one, both were loads of fun as you just drove them flat out everywhere

I used to drive a Bedford Rascal in a job I had - never gave it much thought then.... but I did notice that your accelerator foot practically pressed on the back of the headlight!

You'd not want to hit anything in one, that's for sure.

(A few years back a local loony "Yoof" got a similar Diahatsu diddy van for pennies - to use as a laff in a Drift Competition. He modified it so it was less prone to falling over and was able to spin the rear wheels by cutting holes in the floor and using ratchet straps to stiffen and lower the rear-end...and bunged 60psi in the rear tyres. It worked surprisingly well )
