3D scanners, any here with one?

I have just been looking at 3D scanners because I have a gear that needs copying. However it looks like it is necessary to spend at least £750 so I don't think I will be going down that road.

Is there anyone on the forum with a scanner offering a service in exchange for some folding?

Yep, £750 will get you nowhere if you want any useable CAD data out of it, better off measuring and drawing from scratch unless you can find someone with high end kit.

Im not scanning things that need to be that accurate though. I think its best to just measure and model a gear rather than scan it. Its only a gear.

I have a mate in Brighton who runs an architectural business. He has a scanner and may be willing to do it for some ackers, or even a beer or three. If you like I'll ask him if it's feasible.

There's a piece of open source software which extrapolates a 3d model from (lots) of photographs - good enough for 3d printing size models
It seemed to work quite well according to reviews etc, but my graphics card wouldn't run it.
(It was about 4 years ago).
I can't remember what it was called.

It isn't available. It is a drive gear for an aerial rotator controller, well discontinued. The drive gear is broken into three pieces and it would be great to get it working again. I haven't yet tried to model it, I reckon it might be a bit advanced for my level of knowledge currently. The scan idea was for efficiency.

Autodesk 123D scan, you didn’t miss out on much. Worlds apart from the sort of tech needed to scan and remanufacture a precision component. If I remember I’ll dig out the scan I tried of a classic VW using that software.

Major gear is 35mm diameter. It is 2.31mm thick. The minor gear is 7.2mm diameter and is 4.16mm thick. They may be 82 and 17 teeth respectively.

Will be interesting to see how it comes out with 3d printing.
Might want a fine nozzle on it to get the gear teeth right. Ive not tried gears yet
