Good on them for bucking the trend ! Years ago in Ireland we had a "Buy Irish" campaign, lots of things were made here then, not as much as the UK obviously, but i don't know why something like that couldn't be done now.

They do indeed - but what is to stop a British company copying their designs? No reason why they couldn't make them here at those prices. I see the face mills do NOT have made in Sheffield on them!

Not everything on their site has Made in Britain on it.
There is no reason why you can't make a basic tool holder and sell direct for that kind of money.
I think this might be where they are going wrong. Up the finish a bit and sell for far more

I thought I had!
Very good - a bit basic but nothing wrong with them at all.
I find tool holders much of a muchness tbh. I have some expensive Iskar, Kennametal and Sandvik ones in my collection along with cheap Chinese.
It's the tips that count.
Obviously I am only a hobby machinist and take far lighter cuts than any professional would. I am like a shaper - no good at making money from metal

Her husband Brian makes the tools on a CNC machine. He tries to ensure the steel is UK too. I have known them for years and they run a very straight business.

I think her name is Jenny Blackwell, and I've seen mentioned she was ex Sandvik

I think, in common with a couple of your other recent posts, that your logic is completely inverted in this case.

Just how many ways are there of making a (for example) SCLCR 1616 H06 toolholder? The premium-priced ones (e.g. see ArcEuroTrade Sumitomo) might look smoother, shinier and have nice laser-engraved markings, but how much of that is germane to the tool's function? As long as the insert pocket is robust and the securing screw is of a good quality, the rest is just new-age-maker-marketing-BS that only increases the price you pay.

That is because their market is home workshop-type people and model engineers, whose machines demand that tooling. You would be complaining if they were trying to market 32mm shank negative rake holders to Myfordists.

If you are looking for UK-made, seek out Chesterfield Machine Tools. They do a similar line of no-frills, UK-made holders, some quite specialised (e.g.for line boring gear).

Usually have a stall at Newark (or used to when I went which was over two years ago!). Always good advice as well

Definitely good gear. I had some Glanze holders before and was always getting fed up with how badly the inserts seated into the holders; I bought a few from Jenny and they've all been spot on.

You're absolutely right Nice that they cater to this market specifically. I wonder how many home-shop guys have bought a negative rake holder and some extreme roughing inserts off ebay*, and found that they don't do what they need them to do... bit difficult when you need 6-7hp just to make a tool run right

*I didn't do this myself... no, not at all... I certainly didn't buy 4 types of CNMG insert before finding one that works for finishing cuts! Some knowledge is costly...

You know, you could well be right, I am absolutely shocking with names*. Really knowledgeable guy whatever his name and very helpful.


*Our white standard poodle has been gone four years, I still call the black one Roland, but his name is Tim.

Nice to hear this about the company.
So how about this.
Stop buying stuff from China or Germany and try and souce from Britain. As long as there is a suitable equivalent of course!
