Knife seized at customs, old bill visit.

Had a copper asking for me down the boatyard this morning. Delivering an important letter (which was open and he would have read it...)
I ordered a knife (single hand opening locknife, like I got loads of, and use daily) which I fancied, from 'GoGun'.
Weeks later, it's been seized by Her Majestys as a flick knife. It isn't. I'm not a see you next tuesday.
100 quid knife. I would drive to customs and either A pick it up, or demand compensation. It is theft due to ignorance.

Bad luck, sorry. You might me more likely to get it in your hands with a gentle puzzled approach quoting details of the law and what you use it for, why you need it one handed etc. I love one hand openers but haven’t carried one with anything more than a Stanley blade (can justify) for years since getting one confiscated.

If you asked the supplier or manufacturer for a letter confirming the knife is legal and passed that on to the authorities, it would probably do more good that blowing your stack down the phone at them. Demonstrating you overreact to stuff like this isn't going to help in the slightest

Same here, a knife is only a weapon if you use it as one. Bit like confiscating a hammer because of Peter Sutcliffe shenanigans

im on record for having a haversack of tools . when i was 17 i finished work at 8 pm and went to the pub got stopped at 11 by the old bill and questioned about them .still on the books after 40 years because i got pulled by the ;law and told em where to go ending in xxxxx off it was then he mentioned it

I am record aged 15 for having a full prolonged fist fight with a policeman - he shoved me over onto the floor for nothing and put the boot in - I got up and we were at it. Then his mate tried to come to his rescue - batton raised - somehow he managed to hit his colleague with the truncheon. I got away from the pair of them - then got arrested outside my house. By a nice lady Policewoman who had interviewed some onlookers already and she knew in her heart of hearts what had gone on.

When I got released from the cells without charge - the Sargeant walked me to the Police Station gate and quietly said to me "You have not been in trouble before - I don't want to see you here again son - but you did give a good account of yourself for a young lad - however bruised you feel - it is nothing compared to damage you have done to the reputation of the two coppers involved - the pair of them really did fancy themselves in a scrap - they are never gonna live this down - ever - if I have my way".

Back to the knife, it's an assisted opener I have one somewhere and they are legal as long as the blade is not spring assisted and you have a need for one handed opening.

If they sent me a letter like that i'd cause bedlam. A bee-line would be made to find this PC 20714 and a right row would ensue.

Edit. They have to prove you did something illegal, you don't have to prove you are innocent. Don't forget that.

Perhaps I need to clarify, when I say "screaming the gaff down" I am not referring to shouting.
I am referring to a couple of hours on a computer typing letters, that are then posted recorded delivery. "They" (whoever "They" is at the time) really don't like it.
A carefully worded letter pointing out quite clearly the relevant law and then asking the "authority" to demonstrate exactly how you have contravened this law. Did this to someone I know a few years back with knives, no good reason, just someone playing Judge, Jury and Executioner. It was a large consignment and he almost went bust over it.

Occasionally heard at a local post office: "Does it contain anything dangerous?" Me: Yes, it is a book. Not many people get it.

Please read his original post, look at the letter and think a bit. He 'imported' the knife, so it has come from overseas (I guess USA). The letter mentions Border Force. They have no interest in stuff sold in this country. Do you really think an overseas supplier will know about the legality of his wares in other jurisdictions?

northwest's advice is good. They have cited the legislation under which they have seized it. Every word of that legislation is available online (https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2006/38/contents). Read it and understand what it defines 'flick knife' as. Google around the name of the Act and 'flick knife'.

Ideally, you want to find some text that specifically excludes your knife from the definition of 'flick knife'. Otherwise, try to find a similar device on sale here. Gather your evidence and present it in a reasoned manner.

Yes thanks northwest ( and for all the comments about the old bill, which made me laugh so much the neighbour's dog started barking madly).
I will sit down and make a stab at it (or perhaps i should rephrase that).
Definitely not assisted opening, just thumb opening for right handed people. I agree any form of assisted opening is potentially dangerous, in particular as it would have been a) possibly carried in a jeans pocket b) used by a relative stranger.
