square 12ft by 12ft

ok i am making a square 12ft by 12ft, i need to now the messurement from one corner to the opisite corner so i can get it square,
can some one help with this as i have no idea how to work this out, maths was never my strong point

(12 squared, plus 12 squared, equals, then square-root)

Simples.... you need pythagoras:

A^2 + B^2 = C^2

So (12x12) + (12x12) = 288

Square root of 288 = 16.97ft

Which is the diagonal (hypotenuse) of your right angle triangle.

Get the right angle of a corner set first before you play at getting equal diagonals by using :-
Three units , four units and five units on a non stretch line or a straight pencil lines on a base . If using the line method ,at each point tie a bit of thin line with a reef knot , join the ends and then make a triangle , you will soon see the right angle of 90 degrees , span this off and then measure the sides to 12 feet


Pythagoras's thorem the square on the hypotenuse is the sum of the squares of the two adjacent sides

so 5 x5 = 3x3 + 4x4

If you are using single lines and marking out pegs with nails in the top make sure the pegs are set well back from any work that may disturb the pegs such as digging the foundations or pouring a concrete base.

Yes - 3, 4, 5 triangles are very handy to remember, especially when you don't have a calculator to hand.

You can multiply them up to gain accuracy, in this case, multiplying by 3 gets you a 9,12,15 triangle which is easy to extend to 12 x 12.

As justme said, it doesnt matter, as long as they are the same
If getting the 2 equal doesn't get it square, you have a problem with the length of one of the sides.

I like your optimism , surely you need a straight base line with one of the 12 feet marked and you still need the right angle extended to set the other 12 feet otherwise you will be messing around trying to set the measurements like a one legged man in an asskicking contest.

If you've got a frame cut from accurate lengths, that needs tweaking square, the equal diagonals method is quick and easy. I agree, it'd be a bit of a faff if you're starting from scratch marking out something on the floor.

a wooden base to put my new shed on. it is going to be raised off of the ground by 1ft

Ah, wood, you'll have a few inches movement either way. I'd nail the ends together, square up, then tack a 2x1 corner brace in while you put the rest of the joists in.

I'm only into wood at a hodbby/diy level, id do something very similar with steel

I take it that maybe it is to simples, for you! Being a fitter/welder now for over 30 years now, this was one of the frist things i learnt! For squaring up a job.
