Storage heater bricks

I’ve got the chance of a couple of old storage heaters. Are the bricks worth having out of them, for making a hearth for heating with propane etc?

I’ve heard a couple of different views, people have did they absorb too much heat others have said they work ok…

no there not worth it unless your using them as refractory heat store

if you want hearth bricks better off using refractory bricks

they only come into there own when you need to store heat for a long time which they take a while to heat up

Interested in this as I have about forty of them, like 6"x6" square lego bricks which stack, but not sure if they are any good as have been stacked out side for years.
As usual, if you were closer, you could have them

storage heater bricks would be better used in a kiln or forge build where the heat is used over a long time

due to its storage propertys

Yeah that’s what I heard, think I’ll leave them. I don’t really need any more junk in my life

Thanks - yeah was just asking as I know someone who will be skipping them, but i don’t think they would suit what I was thinking of doing with them.

If they are free they will be fine, perhaps not perfect. But free always makes things better

I've used a load as retaining to stop earth falling from a rockery. Pleasant dark red colour. They were free and I couldn't see them go to land-fill. I was going to buy paving slabs to do the same job so a win-win in my situation.

I've used them to support the mesh in concrete slabs.

refractory bricks are the best for the lining they have low heat conductivity and stand high temperature wheras a night storage heater brick will absorb the heat even free i wouldnt use them

I’ve just acquired some with the view of using these in an Argentinian style Parrilla grill - thinking that they may absorb the heat from the fire and embers that you drag under the cooking area, but they should also then ensure the stored heat is then ‘released’ to the cooking zone...

Any thoughts on this idea?

They are quite handy items to have around when playing with fire. As a heatproof coaster, windshield/insulator for brazing or even as a worktop for welding/brazing.

I have a few kicking about for just such purposes.

Eww. Yeah, if they're damp then they'll be no good and will probably crumble. Having said that, they'd make decent hardcore!

great for cooking! we lined a few home made bbqs with them it stays hot for ages takes some fuel to get it hot

I got a load years ago and used to virtually give them away to people to put on their woodburners at night. They store a massive amount of heat, so if the stove went out at 5am it would still be putting out heat two hours later. Works very well.
