Yet many folk carry at least 9 radios around with them, in the shape of their mobile phone. Add to that two earbud transceivers!!

I passed for my B licence around 1982 time got my G6 then a year later I took the Morse test and got the A Licence with a G0 Call. I have always had radio equipment starting with a new FT290 around the 1982 time rite up to this Digital stuff. However I can go years before I TX. I still like the hobby but spend more time on other things. But at least I know that all I need to-do is go in to my Shake throw a few switches and I will be up and running on most bands and modes. The last 2 years I put a TYT H/T with a R-P and Hot Spot next to my computer and monitor 91 TG WW as I play computer.

I did my Advanced online with a group setup by Steve Hartley. It was 16 weeks of self study with support from a group of guys online. They delivered it in bitesized chunks each week.
It gave me something to focus on and keep up as work/home life is always busy.

My radio gear went into the loft a few years ago as my interests changed, took most of my antennas down a couple of years ago, but still made sure my licence was kept up to date.
I think apart from my driving test, the morse test was one of the most nerve wracking things I've done!.

I got my B licence around '69 and A licence around '73. At the time I got my B licence, I lived up in West Yorkshire and 2m was absolutely buzzing, many people using modded Pye RT gear, and I had a lot of fun and had a lot of friends.
That also seems pre-historic. 2m is totally dead where I am now. I have two HF rigs, but never use them. Occasionally mess about with the odd project in the middle of the winter, when I prefer to stay indoors.

I have been licenced since 1976 ( GM8LYO) but havent been active for a good few years , getting back into again. My day job in the past involved big radio and TV transmitters so as a hobby it was a bit of a busman's holiday .
These days I do work on the microwave and transmission systems which is all computer based so my interest in radio is returning . My interest is still in building radios and antennas , oddly enough I still have my first receiver that includes a few Denco coils.

Yes i remember in the radio magazines, there was always projects on how to convert ex-public service radios to 2m, usually pye radios too for some reason.

I think it was because the regulations changed from 25kHz channel spacing to 12.5kHz. I think also it was the final push for the existing range of products, which often still used valves in the TX outputs and I think all the new stuff was solid state.
@masleeve yes, I've always been struck by the number of radio/electronic engineers who are very dedicated amateurs.

I used to put 10.245 MHz crystals in CBs with a little trimmer cap, switched between that and the original 10.24 MHz one.
Gave "10 below".
Apologies once again, I'm aware "CBers" were considered the lowest of the low!
Tbh I was more interested in "playing with the wires" than taking to people. I was just as happy making 3W FM broadcast band transmitters or SW receivers, crude walkie talkies or various aerials. Favourites were I think the corner reflector antennaes for TV reception. Done them from ali sheet, mesh etc. A couple of neighbours I made them for still run them.

Its like so much else, CB was a good idea, but its let down by idiots. I had a CB i picked up somewhere for next to nothing, got it hooked up and all heard was a band of lowlife using language that would make a docker blush.

I’ll put this here as I know a couple of folk have one. I’ve a TYT9800 which isn’t working. The data cable that connects the head unit to the body was loose and as I was wiggling it I heard a pop from the body. No magic smoke was released

Yes G4WCS. Been licenced since 85 at 16. It was a lot more active back then as there was nowt like facebook for owd men to complain into the ether on

G7DKY here, spent all summer holiday when I was 14 studying, passed the RAE, got my licence, let it lapse, then got it back about a decade ago as luckily I still had my original dti certificate with my callsign on it. Mostly on dmr these days with a hotspot, although have a 2/70 in the car as well.
