despite having done this for 30 years I’m unable to give any specific advice as the OP hasn’t said what his specifics are

working in his garage laying up resin needs ventilation . and anyone with an ounce of sense wears a breathing mask while using it

im sick to dead of folk comming up with stupid without thought solutions

i see this every day at work with folk that are messed up


i Cant help with welding but I try to share share what I know about health protection, it’s my trade

sadly to no avail.

All i make is one of these every now and then. It shows how strong the pong is as when outside as said, folk could smell it down the street. it takes about an hour to make but a few to set.

I work with fibergass and resin alot.

I've learnt a good Mask makes alot of différence. I often wear a full body 'sperm suit' is what we call them, the dust gets everywhere, when you're grinding back gel coat and resin.

We have a huge workshop, and weather dépendent work ourdoors, but always a decent Mask.

It's the dermatitis issues which pee me off around the mask especially.

It's evil stuff, i've ex collègues who have quit, as they can no longer bear the stuff.

my early experience of laying up boats almost 50 years ago, no H/S was we did it in a big shed...
huge doors open both ends and a gale blowing thru....
hated the stuff.....

then came health and safety for off site protection otherwise id have suggested a wood canopy roof so he could work outside under cover and in pure fresh air

As @Parm and others have pointed out extraction is a total minefield unless you know the exact work being undertaken. In the case of composite fibre work different extraction methods will probably be required for different stages of the task.

Sanding/grinding will require dust extraction (with collection to stop the dust just ending up outside) with extraction from point of origin (ie on tool).

Mixing resins will probably need a fume cupboard of some form.

laying up will need fume extraction at source and certainly not from a point where the fumes will be drawn across the workshop.

All of which should probably be intrisically safe and definatly used in conjunction with the correct PPE.

Should imagine that unless you do it right, another concern is going to be neighbours reporting you to whoever they can think off for the smell and dust settling on their property. Blowing fine dust across their gardens on a sunny day isn't going to go down well.

My mum would have been round with a rather raised voice if it was a washing day . . . probably with a wooden spoon to thrash some sense into you . . .
