Swarf collection thoughts please.

Treated myself to a small drill press a couple of weeks ago and about the only place it can live is by the door in the mancave, like so:



Other than possibly raising it up slightly there's really nowhere else it can go due to the fall of the flat roof but I foresee swarf being a problem. As the cave is multi use and sees a fair bit of wood bothering and also sees OH doing the occasional craft project in there I'd rather keep metallic cuttings in one place if possible as I have no desire whatsoever to annoy her by trailing more dross into the kitchen via my size 9 hobnail boots. I get enough grief from her for bringing sawdust in the house, and rightly so.

Any suggestions for dealing with swarf would be much appreciated .

Vacuum cleaner, with suction hose pointing at the end of the drill bit ?

Just sweep & vacuum up when you're done. That's what I do.

Move the plastic tub from behind it to under the drill table

When you're working with iron or steel have a decent size magnet in a plastic bag near the drill. Collect the swarf, turn the bag inside out and you've collected the swarf. Stick the magnet into a clean bag for next time.

You either have to contain it or collect it.

Ferrous swarf is easy. The more challenging stuff is aluminium and brass.

The rubber matting that looks like Swiss cheese can be a good containment measure: the swarf goes into the holes and the boots on the top, which stops it tracking too far.

Only if you make dust. The trick is a very wide chip with extremely slow feed to make big curlers. Easier done on a lathe but works on drill aswell.

The magnet wands are easy to make. Peice of delrin, drill almost to bottom, drop your magnet on, cap for the end, and a peice of steel rod for the handle.

Cardboard guards held with magnets are great to contain lathe and milling swarf too.

Yes, I'm forever getting in trouble for depositing "springs" everywhere...don't know why, I'm the one that does the hoovering!

The problem I have is I bought a load of (excellent) magnetic usb charging cables. These have strong magnets and 5 pins on the inside, much better than normal cables as they have the freedom to rotate. I can not keep the tiny ferrous dust away from them. I imagine its getting picked up from clothes and grinding dust.

I'd guess it's those where the plug stays in the device, & the lead/connector attaches to it magnetically.

I live in thé countryside, this is all new to me.
