Got a lovely new Esab A40 Savage lid a few days ago and it has made a tremendous difference to my confort and ability to see what I'm doing. So today after trying some v up (which went very well) I thought I'd have another go at V open root. Took the 9" grinder to some 100x100x10mm angle (first time cutting steel with the 9", bit scary but not as much as I expected) and then bevelled it to give 2.5 - 3mm land and 2.5mm gap and tacked it with 2.5mm 6013 at 90A.
I put the root in with Eurotrod 2.5mm 7018s at 100A (10A over the range on the box because my 2.5nn land was closer to 3mm and I was after penetration). Here's the root before and after lifting the slag off.
Then I took a look at the other side and thought, "hey, that looks like great penetration."
Sadly it was mostly slag.
Damned close though. If I had been a little more patient with the angry grinder and made sure I got down to 2.5mm on the land I might have got right through.
Hot passes at 90A went ok. The slag nearly peeled, certainly it was dead easy to knock off. I could have been a little more consistant but this is leaps ahead of where I was.
Then the cap at 100A. There are a couple of restarts towards the end which are a tad messy but overall I was well pleased.
