so I went and had a look for a welding carriage.I second that. You should be able to clamp a welding torch where the oxy torch would go, the angles are adjustable and the speed is finely adjustable, on the fly too, so you can immediately see the effect of altering the speed on the weld. A couple of hundred quid would probably get a good one secondhand.Cannibalising an old mechanised oxy/fuel cutting carriage could be done successfully and on the very cheaply. They are usually sold with track and have a rack and pinion arm for easy adjustment. I’d have thought one could be repurposed as a welding tractor very easily.
Also known as a pug cutter. Dunno why pug but they just were! Extra search term which may help you

PUG, IMP, Beetle. All weird names from BOC/Murex days. Used to be made in the uk.
I have a ESAB Imp. 10x better than the modern SWP style which is based on the Koike, but falls far far short of the mark.
The Koike IG-12 I think it’s called is the machine to have. with their nozzles it produces fantastic cuts.
Victor used to make a nice one, nothing particularly good about the carriage, it was the fact it took a super long Victor torch and the victor nozzles. Such a good cutter.
Pugs are superb for cutting straight lines. The speed adjustment means you can get it exactly right and leave razor sharp cuts at high speed. They really are a wonder to behold.Interesting to know thèse things exist. Everyday a learning day.
