Brit Destroyer Sails Along Russian Coast???

Side-stepping the question as to whether it's a Russian coast or a Ukraine coast, it's a bit of coast where there are lots of Russians! Seeing the picture of the Type 45 destroyer, it looks pretty new and so I Googled it. It is pretty new, but not perhaps very well known because since they were commissioned, the T45's have spent a lot of time in the dock waiting for their very advanced but rather unreliable "propulsion systems" to be fixed. It's main system was supposed to be a gas turbine driving an alternator which drives an electric motor which drives the propellers. The back up system was two diesel engines. Anyhow, seems the clever system has proved very unreliable, so they cut big holes in the side of the ship, took out the two smallish diesels and installed three larger diesels. The T45's are now, apparently, hellishly noisy and Russian submarines can detect them from vast distances. All sounds a bit worrying .

It’s an air defence ship so it’s not particularly designed to be “quiet”, though I don’t believe it’s actually that noisy anyway - we have type 23 frigates for sub hunting which are very very quiet.

The propulsion problem was due to some bad design by Rolls Royce and the cooling system struggled in hot climates, but the same (similar) system is now used in the QE class carriers.

They were massively noisy before the PIP. The power issue is that for political reasons (UK Jobs) they choose to use the brand new Rolls Royce WR-21 power plant rather than the tried and tested GE LM2500.

The surprise emergence of the alternative frigate programme, in addition to the Type 26, is also a sign of disillusionment with late, expensive and flawed offerings from BAE Systems.
In a wider sense, the UK defence-industrial malaise is the result of successive governments failure to think strategically and place regular orders that would ensure continuity of employment and the engineering skills base. It is also perhaps a reflection on a society that does not encourage enough young people into science and engineering. Attainment of celebrity careers in media, sport or entertainment are over-valued, far above those of designers, engineers, technicians and scientists upon who we rely for our way of life and military power.

Everybody I know who worked in defence in the UK ended up retiring early - some very early! And of course, one company after another was subsumed in to BAE.

Cost overruns are usually because the top brass can't make up their minds. Continually changing the spec and then wondering why it costs the earth and is way behind delivery date.

At BAE Barroe they have a manager on god knows how much a year, making sure LGBT employees are looked after, respected and hired into the yard. That’s where the money goes. Quango jobs and departments like that.

Exactly if someone of any colour, creed or orientation wants to come and do the work and graft, they have my praise. But I don’t see why companies need to go out of their way to include them and make special arrangements, that then isn’t equality.

What I don’t get is why you put up with being buzzed on a warship…. Weapons systems active at 100 miles and fire to kill at 75 …. It’s a warship not a bloody showboat
