115v to 240v drills

I started this by accident, by mentioning the fact I have 2 old school B&D drills. One 240v and one 115v
I mentioned that the 115v will be passed on as it is not practicable for me to use it, or MIS to use it.

Old timer replies:
"Oh it will be a simple swop of a few parts

What exactly is the "it" in this statement?
Conversion of the 115v drill to run on 240 volts?
Purchasing parts from B & D today to accomplish that conversion?
Or swapping parts from the 240v drill ( presumably that is the GD25 drill ) into the "other" drill to make it run on 240 volts?

What parts are needed to simply swop out, I have 240v to 115V transformer here. But MIS have chosen not to use 115v. So any tools in that range get moved on.

B&D have not done spares for those drills for 20+years now, so that is not a choice. If they were U/S I would consider using parts recovered from other dead drills or breaj them for parts to fix future B&D kit.

I have no plans to swop anything.
It was the debate of old verse young to see what this good forum thinks about it.

An AC power tool motor ( "universal" motor ) is always series-wound, so a series/parallel windings swap for 240 vs. 115 is not possible. Additionally, to get the same wattage for the tool, the 115v windings will use thicker wire.
Even if the stator and armature sizes look similar, I'm sure the helical pinion teeth cut on the end of the slow-speed GD25 armature shaft will be unique to that model.

It's the armature that's the problem. The field windings could be wound so that series and parallel operation was possible, and those could then be put in series with the armature, but the armature couldn't easily be switched between 120 and 240V except, perhaps, by having 4 brushes, with two in use for 240V and all 4 in use for 120V.

That's the kind of thing commonly found on transformers, but surely motor armatures are not normally made like this?

I don't know about small motors like this but two speed three phase motors use centre tapped windings (strictly I think it's two windings rather than a centre tap) which can be swapped between parallel in star and series in delta to give two speeds (and consequently operate at two different voltages)

The problem with statements like this is that over the years there have been all manner of weird an wonderful things done by electrical engineers and designers.

I wouldnt rule anything out as a possibility without having actually got my hands on the motor in question and inspected/tested it

Mains powered drill technology has not changed significantly over the years.

Go here, for example and see which parts are specific to the 110v version and which are specific to the 230v version.

Whatever parts Makita changes between the models, B&D will change the same ones.

Armature.
The other parts are bigger than what you need since it will need a lower current.

About my opinion .
It will not be worth to modify, and tbh a crime.
Those tools are pieces of history .
I'd rather prefer to use a transformer
