did I miss the part that absolutely everyone started on new tyres. hopefully so

Everyone started with a different set of tyres at the restart, some on new and some on tyres that had only covered a few laps, everyone started on the red banded softest option available this weekend.
Also LH had a new front spoiler fitted as the old one had a hole in the nosecone from a debris strike.

it will be interesting to know what the analysis of the blowout causes where. Pirelli thought those white band hard option tyres should be good for in excess of fourty laps. Neither tyre that failed had covered that amount of laps.

I think the "magic brake" button probably keeps the front brakes slightly on during the warmup lap. If the brakes are dragging, the disks get hot, calipers get hot, wheelrim and tyres etc.

It is conceivable that having recently engaged/disengaged this mode, it might have been at the top of a menu. It is extraordinary to think there might be an entire button for this mode when it is something you'll only use once in any given outing. it really ought to be a faff to get it to switch on but super easy to switch off. That's not hindsight, that is a statement of the bleedin' obvious!

You can see a huge amount of smoke and heat on LH front end as he sits at the restart so it was definitely on. Maybe the truth is he simply forgot to switch it off...

@Screwdriver surely you are wrong !! this would mean hamilton is not a demi god and is human , no that cant be right surely (thats a joke before anyone throws a wobbly) either way it does make the point scoring interesting and in fact for a change there does seem to be some level of luck evening things out a bit for Max after a tyre cost him so dearly , even if the "luck" was human error

It was also interesting that immediately after Max tyre blew, someone at Red Bull was on the radio to the race director saying the race should be red flagged as they had seen no warning of the failure, eg loss of pressure etc prior to the sudden failure.
Obviously that had nothing to do with the fact that, if the race was red flagged and not restarted then the race is declared from the driver positions on the previous lap. meaning Max P1 and Cheko P2, maximum points for red bull.
Then Red Bull admitting that Cheko stopping immediately after crossing the finish as he had been nursing a hydraulic issue and it was unknown if he would finish the race.

like I said earlier in this thread I still get PTSD flashbacks to france 2019 with how insanely boring it was

I'm glad I watched it in a pub as at least I could watch the growth of the grass in the beer garden

Good point , I was only thinking of driver safety after having two 200mph blow outs

You do realise that it is not compulsory to watch F1 if you do not enjoy it.

Neither driver is really "lucky" that a tyre blew out at 200mph but they are both lucky it was the rear left. Car veered off to the right and struck a solid concrete wall a glancing blow. Had either car spun off to the left, they would have hit the solid concrete wall in front of pit entry square on.

A glancing blow off a wall is one thing, hitting it square on is something else entirely, ask Ayrton Senna.

I think they said "could have been debris" which is just as true as saying "could have been struck by a micrometeorite".

Unclear how a cut from debris would allow a sidewall to let go rather than the tread.

Just reread you comment and you quoted that he had switched a bias switch but in his interview he said he had switched the break switch off. No mention of a bias . Perhaps he was still in shock during the interview and has had time to think about it. It admit it did seem strange to have a switch that could switch the brakes off.

They have switches that alter the amount of electrical regeneration and shift the bias to heat the tyres up properly on the lap out from the grid, that's the switch he hit. It's called 'brake magic' on the Merc.

Well the French GP was actually pretty good with a decent bit of overtaking. I'm actually starting to feel sorry for Bottas now and he was absolutely justified in what he said on the radio at the end of the race - Valtteri Bottas fumes at Mercedes in French GP - 'Why the f*** does no-one listen to me?' (msn.com) Typically the team could apologise to Sir Hamilton yet only acknowledge what Bottas said with "Copy, we understand"! Some 'team' eh
