Exotica [ no, that's NOT a typo....:-) ]

On the way home from town today I passed strings of motoring exotica, things like Lamborghinis/Porsches/Lotuses etc heading South, having presumably done some [or all? ] of the NC500.

If I get a chance tomorrow I'l try to put up a clip or two from the dashcam.

Today I got an email from my pal on the West today bemoaning the jams caused by the volume of caravans, camper-vans, cars etc mixed in with Courier vans and delivery wagons. Looks like we'll not be seeing each other until around October at this rate - it's like a new variant of Covid .

It's just not worth the hassle - the potential is horrendous, because many of these drivers....just.....can't.

Ah cr*p... my mates and I will be up in Krankieland late July on the bikes... luckily we're not going to the far north this time.
Anyway (and keep this to yourself) some of the best roads for a bike aren't on the NC500 route

Mmmmm yes that time of year, camper vans who like both sides of the roads, lycra clad rolling road blocks, 40 20s ( folk doing 40 but drop to 20 each time something comes towards them). And what boils my urine even more is folk who park outside the co op and go off for a walk, taking up all the spaces.

Had to endure a semi wobble box yesterday heading across the A66.

The dual carriageway section by Appleby was coned off to a single lane (for no obvious reason ) with a 40 limit in place so Mr Plank drives at 30, oblivious to the queue behind him. When the d/c goes back to s/c with a 50 limit he increases his speed to all 35 which he maintains until Kirby Thore where the limit drops down to 40. Predictably he slows to 30 again and when it goes back to d/c at NSL further on he sticks at 35!!! When I went past him he looked to be in his 80's and was barely tall enough to see over the steering wheel...

It really is well past the time that people like this were put off the road, for their safety and everyone else's around them.

I see them all the time where I live in the Midlands, I call them the ‘forty-per-hour-f**wits’, because they sit at 40 mph on all roads, no matter what the speed limit or how straight and open the road.

The more annoying thing is the queue of morons who sit nose to tail behind them, no intention of overtaking, but turning a simple single vehicle overtake into a 100+ metre job.

Around this time all the Saudi playboys are having their toys shipped over to London to parade up and down the Kings Road, Knightsbridge, Chelsea etc. Cue insane short bursts of speed, massive acceleration in confined spaces overcrowded with "YouTubers". Da Police won't touch them, not that there is much they can do anyway.

I so want to be angry but tbh, the machinery on display is breathtaking and the noise is just awesome. I might pop down on the bike for a quick looksee. Chances are I'll be the only one that gets a ticket if only because the local plod will be desperate to book someone for something.

Mrs TF's best friend (lives in Scottish Borders) attempted some of it last year; LWB Land Rover with roof tent and (I did express reservations...) gave up, stopping off at ours on the way back down; shunned and cold-shouldered by locals, couldn't find anywhere to get to in order to get away off-road and from the crowds as all gates were padlocked and tracks and trails blocked off. Found one spot, parked up and took dogs for a walk - came back to find that a pair of camper vans had parked up right next to them only feet away.

I did warn em'... such a shame that it became such a victim of (I won't say 'success') its own beauty.

My understanding is that one person registered 'NC500' as a thing and started a website..?

I drove to London and back on Sunday, and the number of clowns who can’t hold a steady speed is incredible. I sit at 70 on cruise control, and so many cars would pass me, pull in, then drift back forcing me to either slow down a bit, or pull out and pass them again, which makes me feel a bit silly.

Don’t they realise you pass people because you are going faster than them, not because you just want to be in front?

Sound more like he's hit the "kmh" switch.

But the limit is that, a limit, not a target. I'd of been annoyed too, but such is life . . . Its much like when you come up on one HGV limited to 56.1mph taking 15miles to over take the one limited to 56.09mph, don't you think?

I had to endure some twonk in an 8 wheeler gravel truck - caught him in the Caterham, and he proceeded to take the racing line around every corner at his max speed, including when I was alongside him overtaking . . . now that's who needs taking off the road . . . or even some lessons in mirror use . . .

Oh that’s rare, normally they drive in lane two but they do speed up when they get to the road cone storage areas.

One of the guys on the Lancia forum lives up that way, and regularly posts pictures and videos of his laps,sections of laps. Pick the right time (ie not summer, not now) and its empty other than the odd other person picking a sensible time to have a look.

I used to enjoy going to the Highlands last wk Aug or first in Sept on the bike, but I'm not going to bother this year, might try for Shetland in April.

And that's why I take the road less traveled whenever I go diving at Kinlochbervie.

The scenery going via Ullapool and Kylesku Bridge is truly stunning but the touroids make it hard work so I pick the quieter roads which means I can dawdle along at a leisurely pace stopping for a break whenever I feel like it, and I pull off the road and let them past if anyone appears in the mirror .

And I just happen to know a nice man who stays at Bonar Bridge and always has a welcome for a weary Yorkshireman .
