My daughter is flying off to Canada to work for the summer, for reasons I fail to see the logic of.However, she has to do one of these stupid money spinning tests within 72 hours of her flight departure. Which is a Monday @ 14:05
The ‘fit to fly’ test centres all seem to claim ‘you should get the results within 48 hours’. But they also state the test might not get to the lab if it is done on a weekend. So, she’s booked the only sensible slot left in our local Boots: Friday 14:15 which leaves her just 10 minutes inside the 72 hours.
And she has to pay £90 for the privilege too.I‘ve heard some places charge far more than that.
And we are off on a jolly to London next week, to get her ‘biometrics’ (fingerprints) done to get her work permit ... another fiasco, the agent in Canada booked it for her, we booked train tickets, Midland to London... then the date changed, and the tickets are non-refundable.
Fingers crossed they have halted this £1750 hotel quarantine by the time she returns in August. If they haven’t, then we are all in trouble, as it means the sticky C*v*d stuff has hit the fan again.
Oh well, nothing else can go wrong, can it....
Have to admit I do feel quite lucky at this point the company pays for all my PCR tests and has refunded me the £700 plus in expenses I had joining ship last time round. £360 of that was a hire car for 2 days to get to the ship fuel and 2 pcr tests.
Worth checking if your daughters job comes under any key worker status. All Maritime and oil and gas personnel have no requirement too quarantine on return to the UK from any country.

She is working as a ‘councillor’ in a kiddies summer camp, looking after 6-9 years olds,so doubtful she is a key worker.
She may need councilling herself when she gets back, after 8 weeks doing that.
I apologise but I'm gonna be that guy.
She could always not go if she/you doesn't agree with the requirements to enter another country.
I mean if they asked her to come over I'd be expecting them to pay and that's what I've done when asked to travel for work. But if she wants to visit on her own free will then she has to kinda jump through their hoops unfortunately.
I do however agree that mandatory quarenite when she gets home if she's got a permanent place of residence is excessive but I assume this is because so many other people don't respect it that it's enforced and that sucks

Make sure she has got very good travel and medical insurance before she goes and is covered for Covid related issues, health, travel and accommodation. I agree with you why she is doing this now isn't the smartest idea, but she wants to make sure she is covered if she gets ill and ends up in a foreign hospital. I dont know if its relevant in this case, but the louder people shout ' This makes no sense' about any part of covid, the less likely it is they will ever accept any suggestion of the sense of it, no mater how clearly it is explained. I've stopped trying.

Makes no sense until you bury 3 of your friends in the last year, your nan last xmas, your grandad this xmas, and your dad's sat coughing his lungs out half the day even after the vaccine because it's given him some more damage on top of COPD and they're worried even with the vaccine if he gets it again it'll give him pneumonia too.
But sure, all us young healthy ones should just go '**Language** it' and travel around spreading it without tests to say we're clear 'cause it barely affects us, it's fine.

I couldn't "like" this. It is absolutely the truth. People need to get a grip and take some aspects of their life seriously. And while they are at it, take just a little bit of responsibility for their actions.

.....admittedly a few years ago but last time I looked you could only go to South Georgia if you were doing a scientific survey or the like (except for visiting briefly as part of a cruise). It would be an interesting place to go but not exactly straight forward to get to.

Her first year at Uni has effectively been a shambles, with lockdown, restrictions, nothing but online study etc, and with 3 more years studying law to go, this is her last chance to do anything before she is effectively thrown into the life long rat race of earning a crust and paying endless bills. So I can’t really blame her for wanting to go away for this summer.
Travel insurance is looking like £160 for her, whereas I paid about £60 last time I had it, two years ago. And she’s 42 years younger than me.....

That's exactly what it is. Anyone that needs to be travelling is getting it paid for. Travelling spreads it. Nobody else should be travelling.

I do have to 'smile ' when the airline companies whinge about the shutdown in air travel when they were the main cause of the virus spreading so quickly. However I do sympathise with those workers who are in financial difficulties in the airline industry but they are not the only ones.
